Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Castner threw his fastball in the 92-95 mph range.
Fastball movement:It's a heavy fastball with some sink.
Slider:He throws a hard slider.
Changeup:Castner throws an offspeed pitch, a changeup or a splitter, but he doesn't show it often.
Control:When he's able to repeat his mechanics, his command is fine.
Poise:He's got the look and mentality to be a short reliever.
Physical Description:Castner is a big right-hander who looks the part of an intimidating closer-type with a Jason Isringhausen-type body.
Medical Update:A shoulder injury forced him to miss his freshman year, but he's now healthy.
Strengths:A real power pitcher with an electric fastball and hard slider.
Weaknesses:He's got no offspeed pitch to speak of. He's had some serious delivery problems in the past which looked better at the beginning of his outings, but fell apart the longer he was out there. A lack of mechanics leads to loss of command.
Summary:Big, intimidating and armed with a power arsenal, he's got the raw tools to be a short reliever some day. He'll need quite a bit of polish as he doesn't have a ton of experience on the mound. His delivery has been bad in the past and while it's been refined, he had some trouble maintaining it throughout an outing. But this kind of arm strength, in that kind of body, doesn't grow on trees ... so he's bound to garner some interest.
