Focus Area
Comments
Hitting Ability:Kipnis has average hitting ability, though his swing can get a little long and sweepy.
Power:He does have some power -- it grades out average -- particularly the other way. He could develop into a 15-homer type as a pro.
Running Speed:He's a tick better than average runner.
Base running:He doesn't get out of the box all that well, but he's not bad once underway. He'll steal a few bases here and there, but it's not a big part of his game.
Arm Strength:Kipnis does not have a particularly good throwing arm.
Fielding:There is some question as to whether he can play center. He's OK there, but may not be a viable everyday option as a pro.
Range:His range grades out as strong average.
Physical Description:Kipnis is a slightly undersized outfielder who may be kind of a tweener.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Kipnis does have some power and can run a little bit.
Weaknesses:He may not have enough speed and defensive ability to play center and he may not have enough bat to play a corner.
Summary:A sophomore eligible outfielder who transferred from Kentucky after being dismissed from that team for rules violations, Kipnis will get plenty of looks thanks to ASU's star-studded roster. If he can prove he can handle playing center and runs well, that will increase his stats. Otherwise, he may be viewed more as a fourth-outfielder type.
