Weight:180 lbs.
Report Date(s):03/21/08

Focus Area
Fastball:Montgomery has had a jump in velocity up to 93 mph, though he sits comfortably at 90.
Fastball movement:When he throws it downhill, it usually has sink and tail.
Curve:It's slurvy, at 76-78 mph, and he bounces them more often than not. Every so often, he breaks off a good one.
Changeup:He's developing a feel for it, but right now it's a show-me pitch at 79-82 mph.
Palm ball:It has curve action, a downward roller with bite and depth. It's an average pitch at times.
Control:He's a consistent strike thrower and is usually around the plate, particularly with the fastball and palm ball.
Poise:He's got good demeanor on the mound.
Physical Description:Montgomery is tall and lanky with a projectable frame. He's got long arms. He's a long leverage type of pitcher.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:The jump in velocity, his ability to throw strikes and his projectable frame.
Weaknesses:Right now, he's just a two-pitch pitcher and it's unclear whether the palm ball will work at the next level. You have to project on the breaking ball and changeup.
Summary:Every spring, there seem to be high school lefties who gain some "helium" and move up Draft charts. Montgomery is one of them this season, thanks to a spike in velocity that has the southpaw getting up to 93 mph. Combine that with decent command and a projectable frame and he's becoming more intriguing to teams willing to work with him on developing his secondary offerings.
