Comments
Fastball:Murphy's velocity can cover a wide range. In the Cal Poly start, he was sitting at 88-89 and up to 91 mph. He has touched 92-93 in the past.
Fastball movement:He has arm-side sink and run.
Curve:He throws an average top-to-bottom curve that has some depth to it.
Slider:He has a hard and tight slider that's short with tilt.
Changeup:He has good arm speed on his change and the pitch has good arm-side sink and fade.
Control:His command has been inconsistent due to some mechanical issues, a severe stab in the back that throws him off-line.
Poise:He is extremely competitive and always battles to keep his team in the game.
Physical Description:Murphy is a strong, lean and durable lefty with a physically mature look and broad shoulders.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:He has a four-pitch mix that works and he's extremely competitive.
Weaknesses:He needs to clean up his mechanics to improve his command.
Summary:College lefties are always of interest come Draft time and this Draft class does not have a ton to offer. Murphy offers up a four-pitch repertoire that he mixes well to keep hitters guessing. His stuff isn't off the charts, but he has a good idea of how to pitch and is a battler on the mound. If he can clean up some mechanical problems, he can become a durable strike-throwing starter at the next level.
