Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Sample threw his fastball in the 89-95 mph range.
Fastball movement:It's mostly straight, but he uses his height well to get a good angle.
Curve:It's a plus pitch right now, among the best in the Draft, a 12-to-6 hammer curve he throws 82-84 mph.
Changeup:He doesn't throw it much. He's got some feel for it, though no command, and it projects as an average pitch in the future.
Control:It's a little hit or miss. In this particular outing, he was around the zone. In the past, he's had issues with walks.
Poise:He's shown the ability to maintain composure even when he's battling command issues.
Physical Description:He's got a similar body type to Aaron Harang. Later on, he might have to watch his weight as he's not that good of an athlete.
Medical Update:He had Tommy John surgery in 2006 and missed all of last year, but is healthy now.
Strengths:He is all power, with an outstanding fastball-curve combination. He's got a clean delivery despite his size.
Weaknesses:Command. He's still getting a feel for his body and will have to stay on top of his body to maintain his athleticism.
Summary:If you're looking for a big right-hander with power stuff, Sample might be your guy. He's got a fastball that cranks up to 95 mph and a hammer curve. He doesn't use the change much, but it should be a pitch for him in the future. He's never going to be an above-average command guy, but he should throw enough strikes to be successful. He might be a bit of a project, but at 6-foot-7 with that kind of stuff, someone will be willing to try and see it through.
