Biographical Data
Player Name:Bryce Stowell
Position:Starting Pitcher
School Type:College
Academic Class:Sophomore
Weight:205 lbs.
Report Date(s):03/29/08

Focus Area
Fastball:Stowell threw a fastball in the 90-92 mph range, but pitches comfortably in the 87-90 range.
Fastball movement:He throws a fairly straight fastball.
Slider:He's got a big, sweeping slurve. When he raises his arm slot every once in a while, it becomes more of a downer.
Changeup:He hasn't shown much of a feel for a changeup in the past because of his arm action, but he was a little better on Saturday.
Control:He has below-average command and is erratic with spotting his fastball.
Poise:He is very competitive on the mound, almost with a bullpen mentality.
Physical Description:Stowell is a very physical, athletic pitcher with muscular arms, broad shoulders and a trim waist.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Good athletic body; extremely competitive nature on mound.
Weaknesses:While his mechanics have been improved, his arm action makes it hard for him to repeat his pitches consistently.
Summary:With a strong, athletic frame, Stowell looks the part of a pro pitcher. Stuff wise, he shows glimpses of pitching the part, too, with an average fastball, a slider that could improve with a better arm slot and a changeup that appears to be improving. A terrific competitor, the one thing Stowell lacks is the mechanics and arm action to repeat his pitches. That, plus the fact he's sophomore-eligible with some leverage make it a little difficult to place where he might go.
