Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Wieland threw his fastball in the 88-91 mph range with some pitchability.
Fastball movement:There's some sink and arm-side run when it's down in the zone.
Curve:He can throw his curve for strikes at will and is ahead of most high schoolers in that regard.
Changeup:He actually showed a changeup in the game and he has some feel for it.
Control:He's got good command for a prep pitcher and could be a plus strike thrower in the future.
Poise:Confident, but not arrogant, he's got terrific mound presence that is above average for a high schooler.
Physical Description:Wieland is lean and skinny, kind of like a Justin Duchscherer.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Good arm action, good delivery and excellent feel for pitching.
Weaknesses:Body strength. There isn't much to project; he's not going to be a very physical guy.
Summary:While he doesn't belong in the discussion of elite pitchers in this Draft class, Wieland does have some pretty good pitchability. Not too many high schoolers can throw their breaking ball for strikes at will, but count Wieland among the few. With the ability to command his fastball and a feel for a change, the wiry right-hander is the kind of high schooler who could move fairly well through a system and emerge as a back-of-the-rotation type in the future.
