Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Barrett has a good fastball arm, throwing the pitch in the 90-94 mph range.
Fastball movement:It's not completely straight, but there's not great movement.
Curve:He throws a power curve, 74-77 mph, and will throw it at any time. He sometimes falls in love with it.
Split:It's a good pitch, used particularly well against left-handed hitters. He throws it 75-76 mph with good, straight, downward action.
Control:Has good location of his fastball, and his command was improving with every start.
Poise:He's an emotional guy, a little fiery, but keeps it together on the mound. You'll see some fist pumps from time to time.
Physical Description:Barrett is a big strong righty who is a little heavy. He's not fat, but he's got some meat on the bones. He reminds some of a Boof Bonser type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Good high school power arm with improving command.
Weaknesses:There's some effort to his delivery at times, with him falling off to the first base side. He doesn't have a true changeup. Some could be concerned about his body.
Summary:Perhaps the top high school player in Arizona this year, Barrett is a big, strong right-hander who's only 17 but can touch 94 mph with the fastball. Add in a power curve and a splitter and he's got an interesting, if unusual, three-pitch mix. His command has improved over the course of the season. His mechanics might need some work as there's a little effort with his delivery, but young power arms who can actually locate a fastball aren't all that common, so Barrett could find himself a pretty good commodity in June.
