Comments
Fastball:Berglund throws his fastball in the 88-93 mph range and it sits comfortably at 90 mph.
Fastball movement:It has good sink and tails down in the zone. It's straight and hittable if it stays up.
Slider:Throws it 80-83 mph, a power pitch with hard, short and late bite. He'll throw it at any point in the count. It's an out pitch.
Changeup:Has a feel for a circle change, 77-81 mph, with some arm-side sink and fade.
Control:He's a strike-thrower who hits spots well.
Poise:A smart pitcher, he shows a lot of confidence on the mound.
Physical Description:Berglund has a tall, lean and athletic frame, a very projectable body with room to fill out and get stronger. He reminds some of a Mike Mussina type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Good feel for pitching, with three average to above pitches; good command and a projectable body.
Weaknesses:Doesn't have the fastball right now that some like to see from the top high school arms.
Summary:Berglund is a step or two behind the top high school pitchers in this class, even in Southern California, but there's still a lot to like. He's got a tall and projectable frame, three pitches he can throw for strikes and a pretty good idea of how to pitch. While his fastball doesn't light up guns, there's a chance that, as he matures, he'll find more in the tank. He's not one of those high-octane arms you'll see go off the board in the top round, but he might not be that far behind.
