Jared Mitchell (Photo: Steve Franz/LSU)

Biographical Data
Player Name:Jared Mitchell
School Type:College
Academic Class:Junior
Weight:192 lbs.
Report Date(s):5/20-5/24/09
Game(s):SEC Tournament

Focus Area
Hitting ability:Mitchell has a quick bat, but with a high elbow, tends to swing under the ball.
Power:Has average raw power, which could develop into more because of the bat speed.
Running speed:It's his one plus tool right now.
Base running:Can steal a base -- he had 30 of them this season entering regional play -- and he can improve in terms of using his speed to leg out hits, bunting, etc.
Arm strength:Has a below-average arm from the outfield.
Fielding:He has the speed to allow him to outrun misreads. He'll likely get the chance to develop as a center fielder, but some think he'll be limited to left.
Range:His speed allows him to cover a lot of ground.
Physical Description:Mitchell is strong and athletic. He also played wide receiver for the LSU football team. He's got a Garret Anderson-type build.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths: Plus speed, raw power potential, exciting athleticism.
Weaknesses:While he improved in terms of drawing walks this year, he strikes out too much and swings under the ball. Everything about him, except his speed, is a projection.
Summary:Mitchell certainly was one of the more intriguing college bats as Draft day approached. Playing for a high-powered LSU team, he showed the exciting athleticism that made him a two-sport standout, with plus speed and flashes of raw power. He's got some serious holes in his swing and, perhaps because of his split focus, he's more projection than anything else right now. Whoever takes him -- and it could be in the first round -- will likely see him as a center fielder who will steal bases and hit for power in the future.
