Comments
Fastball:Skaggs ran his fastball up to 92 mph with a quick arm.
Fastball movement:Had plus life down in the zone, though he had the tendency to elevate the ball.
Curve:A plus now, with tight rotation. It's slower, 70-73 mph, with swing-and-miss bite. Hitters give up on it and it lands in the strike zone.
Changeup:A work in prgress.
Control:Average for a high school pitcher; potential to have above-average command with two pitches.
Poise:Went right after hitters in this outing.
Physical Description:Tall and lean -- like a young Barry Zito type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Two above-average pitches with life; prototypical body type.
Weaknesses:Delivery runs away from his arm, causing him to elevate the ball. His arm slows down slightly when he throws his breaking ball.
Summary:Everyone loves a decent lefty and Skaggs has the chance to be a good one. Tall and lean, he's got the protypical body type scouts love -- and he's got two above-average to plus pitches to go along with it. Good performances this spring could put this prep southpaw high on many Draft boards.
