Focus Area
Comments
Hitting ability:Tate is a little crude at the plate, but he's not all raw. He's got some approach while his athleticism and bat speed takes over.
Power:He has good raw power now and should have at least average power at the big-league level.
Running speed:A plus runner.
Base running:Just OK at this point on the bases.
Arm strength:Has a solid-average to plus arm from the outfield.
Fielding:An above-average defender.
Range:With speeed and some good instincts, he gets good reads. He uses his speed better gap-to-gap than he does on the bases.
Physical Description:Tate is a long and lean right-handed hitter with strength, kind of like a Chris Young type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Some noticeable tools, with terrific raw power, good speed and above-average defensive skills.
Weaknesses:His hittability. There are some concerns about his bat.
Summary:Tate is another Georgia high schooler with some serious tools. He doesn't quite have the feel for the game that last year's No. 1 pick Tim Beckham had, but he's also not completely raw. He has the potential to hit for pretty good power, runs well and plays a pretty good center field. There are some questions about his bat and how long it will take to develop. The team that thinks he's going to hit is the one that will take the chance and draft him high.
