March 1 -- The new strike zone debuts in Spring Training games in Florida.

March 8 -- Albert Belle is "found to be totally disabled and unable to perform as a Major League baseball player," following Wednesday's examination of the outfielder's degenerative right hip by team orthopedic surgeons Dr. Charles Silberstein and Dr. Michael Jacobs.

March 25 -- Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson kills a dove flying in front of home plate with a pitch in the seventh inning of a 10-5 exhibition win against the Giants Saturday. The bird flew over the catcher Rod Barajas' head and landed a few feet from the plate amid a sea of feathers.

March 28 -- In the feel-good story of the spring, the Expos announce that Tim Raines Sr. has made the 25-man roster.

March 30 -- The Indians announce that eventual 17-game winner and Rookie-of-the-Year C.C. Sabathia has made Cleveland's rotation.

March 30 -- Dwight Gooden retires.

March 31 -- Commissioner Bud Selig is awestruck after getting his first glimpse of Miller Park.
