Regular Season Pitching Performance of the Year

April 4 -- Of course a Red Sox pitcher threw a no-hitter. But... it was Hideo Nomo? Nomo kick-starts Boston's season after a bit of a slow start, tossing a no-no against Baltimore. A great catch in the ninth by Mike Lansing helps secure the feat.

May 8 -- The Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson, on the way to his third straight Cy Young Award, ties the Major League record for strikeouts over nine innings with 20 against the Reds.

July 6 -- Oakland's Mark Mulder is the picture of efficiency. Mulder pitches a one-hitter, and not only does he not walk anyone, he doesn't go to a single three-ball count. The A's top Arizona 3-0.

Sept. 2 -- The Yankees' Mike Mussina comes within one batter of perfection. Carl Everett's two-out, ninth-inning single spoils Mussina's bid for a perfect game, but Moose gets the one-hitter and the Yankees sweep the Red Sox at Fenway.

Sept. 3 -- Ignoring baseball superstition, the Cardinals' Bud Smith becomes the 16th rookie in modern history to throw a no-hitter, mowing down the Padres.

Honorable Mention

May 7 -- The Dodgers' Kevin Brown comes within inches of a no-hitter and strikes out 10.
May 12 -- It's far from perfect, but Florida's A.J. Burnett throws a no-no against the San Diego Padres.
