Scott Rolen - Fantasy News & Updates
While Rolen's best years are clearly behind him, it's worth highlighting that he stayed healthy for much of the year with 128 games played, his highest total since 2006. Don't be surprised if moving back to the NL, where he enjoyed his finest stretch with the Cardinals, goes one step further toward reviving Rolen's bat. He's worth stashing away in the end game.
Rolen has gone through an injury-riddled season, but his .305 batting average and 65 RBIs have been decent numbers for mixed-league play. But his 11 homers and the fact that he'll play in fewer than 130 games for the third straight year suggest his value will only dwindle further before Opening Day 2010.
A much-needed breakthrough from Rolen, who reversed a 1-for-9 slide while lifting his season average back up to .306. In 113 at-bats since joining the Reds, the veteran third baseman is hitting .265 with two jacks, six doubles and 18 RBIs.
Much has been made over Francisco's power, and for good reason. In 131 games combined with Double-A Carolina and Louisville, he batted .295 with 31 homers and 93 RBIs. Also worth noting was how few adjustment issues he experienced after his promotion to Triple-A, having hit .359 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 22 games. With Scott Rolen entrenched at the hot corner, the Reds will eventually take a look at Francisco in left field.
If not for a hitless pinch-hit at-bat on Sept. 2, Rolen would have a nine-game hitting streak. The third baseman is batting .328 with seven RBIs in 15 games since returning from post-concussion syndrome, and he should continue to roll during the series at Coors Field, which lasts through Sept. 10. Rolen has a .339 batting average with 23 RBIs in 33 games (127 at-bats) at the ballpark.
Rolen was placed on the DL Aug. 11, a little over a week after he was beaned in the head by a Jason Marquis pitch, with concussion symptoms. He was 2-for-6 with an RBI in a pair of rehab starts for Triple-A Louisville. Harang ends his '09 season with a 6-14 record, 4.21 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 162 1/3 innings pitched.
On Tuesday, Rolen took full batting practice, fielded ground balls, threw across the diamond and ran on the treadmill at 80 percent intensity. The headaches that had bothered him have gone away. "I don't have any symptoms at this point," Rolen said. "I did a lot [Tuesday] and had no trouble." If all goes well, he'll be activated on Aug. 23. Adam Rosales, who has been filling in for Rolen, will return to a backup role.
Rolen landed on the 15-day DL Aug. 11, one day after getting plunked on the head by Jason Marquis. If he's not bothered by more headaches, Rolen could begin to take batting practice as he attempts to get himself back into the lineup for his new club.
Rolen was beaned by Colorado starter Jason Marquis on Aug. 2. He came back after missing two games, but the headaches and dizziness persisted, and he was diagnosed with a concussion after further tests. Rolen, who was 2-for-14 (.143) with one homer and two RBIs in his four games with Cincinnati, is eligible to come off the DL Aug. 23.
Rolen is dealing with the aftereffects of getting plunked on the helmet Aug. 2. He won't engage in any kind of strenuous physical activity until his symptoms subside. Rolen will travel with the Reds to St. Louis for their Aug. 10-12 series, but it's unlikely he'll play until at least Aug. 13, when the team hosts the Nationals. Adam Rosales will likely handle third-base duties in Rolen's absence.
The injury is a result of Rolen getting hit in the head by a Jason Marquis pitch Aug. 2 vs. the Rockies. The third baseman missed the ensuing two games but returned for the Reds' Aug. 5 and Aug. 7 affairs. After being withheld from the lineup in the afternoon, Rolen is expected to return to Cincinnati Saturday night for a medical evaluation Sunday. Adam Rosales got the start at the hot corner in place of Rolen.
Rolen, who had missed two consecutive games after being hit in the head by a pitch Aug. 2, returned to the lineup Wednesday and promptly jacked one out for the first time as a member of the Reds. The veteran hot cornerman has started to find something of a power stroke since the Midsummer Classic, stroking three homers and knocking in 10 runs in the last 11 contests.
The Reds are taking a safe approach with their newly acquired third baseman, who was hit on the helmet by a pitch on Sunday. Rolen received a CAT scan Monday, with everything looking OK on his MRI. "It still hurts in the spot where the ball hit me through the helmet," Rolen said. "It is really sensitive." Reds manager Dusty Baker said Rolen needs to make sure he feels no dizziness before he gets back onto the field.
Reds manager Dusty Baker said Rolen didn't sustain a concussion, though he did have a headache. "I've never seen a ball ricochet like that," said Baker, describing what happened after the ball hit Rolen's helmet on Monday. "That ball went all the way to third base." No word yet on the veteran's return date. Rolen, who was acquired from the Blue Jays at the July 31 Trade Deadline for Edwin Encarnacion, is 0-for-6 since joining the Reds. He was replaced in Monday's lineup by Adam Rosales.
Rolen walked off under his own power and appeared OK as he left the field. He was 0-for-2 in his second game with the Reds. Adam Rosales replaced the Reds' newly acquired cornerman at third. Stay tuned for more on Rolen's condition.
