Fantasy Analysis
The Rangers will look for a utility infielder in the free-agent market, eyeing a long list of names including Jamey Carroll, Juan Uribe, Mark Loretta, Alex Cora and John McDonald.
The likely addition would replace Omar Vizquel, whom Texas had interest in re-signing and at one point were thought to be close to a deal. But Vizquel is going to test the market and there is a possibility he could sign with either the Phillies or the Red Sox.
Mets general manager Omar Minaya met with agent Scott Boras on Wednesday to discuss parameters of possible deals for two of his clients -- Matt Holliday and Alex Cora.
Holliday, who ended the season with the Cardinals, is one of the premier outfielders on the free-agent market and is expected to receive various lucrative offers. Boras is said to be seeking a deal similar to the eight-year $180 million contract inked by Mark Teixeira last offseason. Cora, a utility middle infielder, played for the Mets this past season and can be re-signed by Minaya during the 15-day exclusivity period, which ends at midnight on Nov. 19.
Alex Cora batted .251 with one homer, 18 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 271 at-bats in 2009.
Cora served as the Mets' primary shortstop for a good chunk of the season while Jose Reyes was injured, but he provided little for owners to work with outside of a few steals. His season was cut short by torn thumb ligaments, but even if he's healthy for the start of 2010, he'll see reduced playing time with Reyes back in the fold.
Alex Cora underwent season-ending surgery on his left thumb on Sunday.
The injury is said to be similar to the torn ligaments in his right thumb which originally sidelined him. No word yet on whether this impacts Cora's 2010 season.
Alex Cora went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday, his first of the year.
Cora's solo blast was all the offense the Mets could muster against a lights-out Mat Latos Saturday night. Thanks to a slew of injuries, the veteran infielder has played more than he -- or any member of the Mets organization -- would have dreamed this season, and has made himself useful to deeper NL-only leagues by crossing home 31 times.
Alex Cora went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI against Arizona on Saturday.
Intangibles do not count in fantasy standings, which means that Cora's contributions in 2009 have been largely worthless in fantasy. The veteran infielder has been seeing the ball very well of late, though, and is riding a four-game hitting streak during which he has gone 7-for-14 (.500) with a pair of walks. His .305 slugging percentage could hardly be lower, but with Jose Reyes still struggling to run without pain, Cora could well wind up being the Mets' shortstop for the rest of the year.
Second baseman Luis Castillo missed the first game of the Mets Thursday doubleheader against the Rockies to attend the birth of his second child.
Castillo, who is batting .306 with 56 runs and 11 steals, is expected to return in time for the nightcap. Alex Cora started in his place at second and Angel Berroa played short.
Left fielder Cory Sullivan and shortstop Angel Berroa started their first games in a Mets uniform on Wednesday. Regular shortstop Alex Cora was out nursing a sore thumb
In May, Cora rehabbed a torn ligament in his right thumb, and he has played without problems since. But after reaching for a throw from right fielder Jeff Francoeur on Tuesday night, Cora had to brace himself, showing some pain. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said that Cora would likely only need to take one game off. The team is off on Thursday, which would give Cora two days of rest.
Alex Cora went 2-for-4 with a run scored on Saturday.
Add Cora's name to the growing list of part-time players benefiting from the myriad of Mets' injuries this season. Cora has filled in admirably for Jose Reyes at short, but his .244 average and 12 RBIs won't exactly make anyone forget the Mets' speedster.
The Mets called up Angel Berroa on Thursday to replace Argenis Reyes, who was demoted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Berroa, who hit just .136 in 22 at-bats for the Yankees in 21 games before being released in late June, gives the Mets little more than a quality defensive shortstop in case they need to rest Alex Cora. Pass.
Alex Cora went 3-for-4 against the Phillies on Saturday.
Cora has been a solid, scrappy shortstop for the Mets while Jose Reyes is on the DL, despite hitting for essentially no power. His .331 slugging percentage and .263 average don't look like much, but he's proven adept at getting on base -- he has a .357 on-base percentage -- and would surely be scoring enough runs to help owners in deeper NL-only leagues were anyone in the anemic Mets lineup currently capable of driving in any runs.
Alex Cora is batting just .230 with no homers, seven RBIs and eight runs scored through 18 June games.
Despite this cold spell, Cora will continue to see regular at-bats filling in at shortstop for the injured Jose Reyes. With Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran all on the DL, the Mets hope Cora can turn things around soon, as the club needs every bit of offense they can get.
Mets GM Omar Minaya indicated Jose Reyes, who is in the midst of a 48-hour rest period, likely will not be available until 5-7 days at the earliest because of a minor tear in his right hamstring.
Reyes had been close to a return from a calf strain, but injured the hamstring in a rehab appearance in an extended spring training game Wednesday. He'll spend the coming days in New York before likely returning to Florida. "After he rests, we'll probably start the rehab procedures," Minaya said. "The good thing about Reyes is he has a lot of strength in his legs. He's not a guy you'll have to re-start over. He was walking around OK." Alex Cora will earn most of the starts at shortstop, but because of a torn ligament in his right thumb, manager Jerry Manuel is likely to give Wilson Valdez playing time as well.
The Mets placed Ramon Martinez on the 15-day DL with a fractured left pinkie.
With Jose Reyes on the shelf, Martinez was splitting playing time at shortstop with Wilson Valdez. The move should mean more at-bats for Alex Cora, who was activated from the DL on Tuesday. Outfielder Emil Brown was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Martinez on the Mets roster.
Jose Reyes felt pain behind his injured right knee during an extended Spring Training game Wednesday.
Reyes, who has been on the 15-day DL since May 26, returned to New York for further examination. It does not appear likely that he will rejoin the team Friday as had previously been anticipated. With Ramon Martinez on the DL, Alex Cora and Wilson Valdez will split time at shortstop for the Mets.
