Aubrey Huff - Fantasy News & Updates
Neither was expected to be a Tigers' target. Washburn had told reporters last week that he hadn't heard from the Tigers other than to check on his knee after surgery. "We called both Jarrod and Aubrey this week and told them we will not be pursuing them," Dombrowski told Booth Newspapers. "We wished them well."
One year after enjoying an MVP-caliber resurgence, Huff completely vanished in 2009, with things growing increasingly worse as the year wore on. The Tigers aren't expected to bring back the veteran cornerman, who struggled mightily after being acquired in August, posting a meager .189 average. That likely opens the door for Marcus Thames as DH. An all-or-nothing slugger, Thames hit .252 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs this past season.
Huff’s trade from the rebuilding Orioles to the contending Tigers has done nothing to improve his fantasy value. In fact, you could find him floundering on the waiver wire now that he's splitting time at DH with Marcus Thames. As long as Huff continues to struggle, do not expect this arrangement to change anytime soon.
Huff, who ended a 19-game power outage with the jack, had struggled mightily during that stretch, going 10-for-58 (.172 AVG) with just six RBIs to drop his average to a season-low .243. With 77 RBIs, the journeyman first baseman could notch his fourth career 100-RBI season if he gets hot down the stretch.
Detroit skipper Jim Leyland wants to get as many left-handed hitters into his lineup as he can against Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona. That means Alex Avila will get the start behind the plate, as will Clete Thomas in right field, Carlos Guillen in left and Aubrey Huff at DH.
A much-needed breakthrough performance for Huff, who entered Tuesday mired in a miserable 3-for-34 (.088) rut since joining the Tigers. This game could turn out to be the turning point. Huff typically thrives after the All-Star break, so it would come as no shock to see him rediscover his stroke down the final stretch.
Huff served as the DH and batted fifth, where he should see plenty of RBI opportunities batting behind a superstar Miguel Cabrera.
Coming off a resurgent season in which he collected 32 homers and 108 RBIs, Huff has come crashing down to earth this year with a mediocre .253 average, 13 homers and a .405 slugging percentage. Leaving the hitter-friendly confines of Oriole Park at Camden Yards probably won't help much, either, considering it's where he sports a lifetime .506 slugging percentage. Compare that to a meager .412 mark at Comerica Park, and it's hard to imagine things getting better for him in Detroit. The one major asset is the presence of superstar Miguel Cabrera, who will likely bat ahead of Huff and provide plenty of RBI opportunities. The Tigers plan to play the 34-year-old in multiple spots, but with Cabrera locked in at first and Brandon Inge manning third, DH and left field are Huff's most likely destinations. That means Carlos Guillen and Clete Thomas will likely have to make the most of limited playing time. In Baltimore, Ty Wigginton stands the best chance to fill Huff's shoes at first base.
