Fantasy Analysis
Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed to Booth Newspapers that they will not be pursuing free agents Jarrod Washburn and Aubrey Huff, both late-season trade acquisitions for the Tigers this past summer who struggled down the stretch.
Neither was expected to be a Tigers' target. Washburn had told reporters last week that he hadn't heard from the Tigers other than to check on his knee after surgery. "We called both Jarrod and Aubrey this week and told them we will not be pursuing them," Dombrowski told Booth Newspapers. "We wished them well."
Aubrey Huff combined to hit .241 with 15 homers and 85 RBIs while playing for the Orioles and Tigers this past season.
One year after enjoying an MVP-caliber resurgence, Huff completely vanished in 2009, with things growing increasingly worse as the year wore on. The Tigers aren't expected to bring back the veteran cornerman, who struggled mightily after being acquired in August, posting a meager .189 average. That likely opens the door for Marcus Thames as DH. An all-or-nothing slugger, Thames hit .252 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs this past season.
Aubrey Huff is hitting a paltry .208 with five homers and 32 RBIs since the beginning of July.
Huff’s trade from the rebuilding Orioles to the contending Tigers has done nothing to improve his fantasy value. In fact, you could find him floundering on the waiver wire now that he's splitting time at DH with Marcus Thames. As long as Huff continues to struggle, do not expect this arrangement to change anytime soon.
Aubrey Huff ripped his 14th long ball in Sunday’s win over the Rays.
Huff, who ended a 19-game power outage with the jack, had struggled mightily during that stretch, going 10-for-58 (.172 AVG) with just six RBIs to drop his average to a season-low .243. With 77 RBIs, the journeyman first baseman could notch his fourth career 100-RBI season if he gets hot down the stretch.
The Tigers plan to rest Placido Polanco, Magglio Ordonez and Gerald Laird on Thursday.
Detroit skipper Jim Leyland wants to get as many left-handed hitters into his lineup as he can against Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona. That means Alex Avila will get the start behind the plate, as will Clete Thomas in right field, Carlos Guillen in left and Aubrey Huff at DH.
Aubrey Huff went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs in Tuesday's 8-5 win over Cleveland.
A much-needed breakthrough performance for Huff, who entered Tuesday mired in a miserable 3-for-34 (.088) rut since joining the Tigers. This game could turn out to be the turning point. Huff typically thrives after the All-Star break, so it would come as no shock to see him rediscover his stroke down the final stretch.
Aubrey Huff went 1-for-4 in his Tigers debut Tuesday vs. the Mariners.
Huff served as the DH and batted fifth, where he should see plenty of RBI opportunities batting behind a superstar Miguel Cabrera.
On Monday, the Tigers acquired infielder/outfielder Aubrey Huff from the Orioles in exchange for Minor League right-hander Brett Jacobsen.
Coming off a resurgent season in which he collected 32 homers and 108 RBIs, Huff has come crashing down to earth this year with a mediocre .253 average, 13 homers and a .405 slugging percentage. Leaving the hitter-friendly confines of Oriole Park at Camden Yards probably won't help much, either, considering it's where he sports a lifetime .506 slugging percentage. Compare that to a meager .412 mark at Comerica Park, and it's hard to imagine things getting better for him in Detroit. The one major asset is the presence of superstar Miguel Cabrera, who will likely bat ahead of Huff and provide plenty of RBI opportunities. The Tigers plan to play the 34-year-old in multiple spots, but with Cabrera locked in at first and Brandon Inge manning third, DH and left field are Huff's most likely destinations. That means Carlos Guillen and Clete Thomas will likely have to make the most of limited playing time. In Baltimore, Ty Wigginton stands the best chance to fill Huff's shoes at first base.
Aubrey Huff cracked his 13th homer of the season Wednesday in four at-bats against Oakland.
It was a rare display of power from Huff, who is slugging just .336 since June 1. With his power mysteriously gone, there are likely better corner infield options available for owners in all formats outside deep AL-only leagues.

Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI Sunday.
After posting a dreadful .189/.245/.295 line in July, there's nowhere to go but up for the 32-year-old veteran. While a repeat of last season's career-year (.304-32-108) is clearly out of the question at this point, owners of the scuffling cornerman can at least take heart in his 64 ribbies, a total that puts him solidly in the AL Top 20.
Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs Thursday against Kansas City.
Huff has hit just .174/.224/.250 in a forgettable July. He’s usually a good second-half player and has suffered from poor luck all season, but owners will likely want to keep him on the bench until he regains his batting stroke.
The Baltimore Sun reported that teams have inquired about closer George Sherrill, but the Orioles are seeking a closer in return. The paper also reported that Orioles right-hander Danys Baez, first baseman Aubrey Huff and third baseman Melvin Mora are available in the trade market.
Mora's no-trade clause and Baltimore's desire to get another fireman for Sherrill make it unlikely they'll be on the move.
Aubrey Huff enters the All-Star break hitting .259 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs.
Owners who drafted Huff hoping that he'd repeat his .304/.360/.552 line from 2008 have been disappointed thus far. He is known as being a second-half player, though, so he could still finish somewhere in the neighborhood of .275/.345/.460.
