Dave Bush - Fantasy News & Updates
Bush said he's still feeling arm fatigue and is worried about the risk associated with making one more start. Thus ends a very frustrating season for Bush, who has been a useful back-of-the-rotation type in deeper NL-only leagues over the last three years, but never got healthy enough to help this season. Bush's 6.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and .294 BAA were all the worst marks of his career.
Bush has taken a loss in six of his last eight starts, although he had somehow made it through six straight outings without permitting a homer before Sunday's game. With a 6.38 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP, Bush can't be considered a solid starting option in any format. Stay away from his season finale matchup on Oct. 3 when he faces the Cardinals in St. Louis.
A decent showing from Bush, who entered the contest having yielded just two runs over his previous 14 frames with a ridiculous 14/0 K/BB ratio in that span to boot. Always the control artist, Bush is a great spot-start option when he faces the same Cubs in a rematch at Miller Park next time out.
This comes on the heels of an outing in which Bush surrendered two runs and walked none vs. St. Louis, so it appears he's rounding into form following a two-month stint on the DL for a torn triceps muscle. The righty faces a bit of a challenge with a road start vs. the Cubs up next on Sept. 17, but with the sharp control he's shown, it's worth sticking with him for that outing.
Bush ran into a near-unhittable Chris Carpenter on this one, and his Brewers were one-hit. Still, despite the L, this was an encouraging outing for Bush, who was shelled for eight runs on 11 hits over 3 1/3 in his Sept. 2 start and had generally looked unsteady in his recovery from an elbow injury. He pitched much more effectively and assertively here, and NL-only owners may want to get him back into their rotations when he takes the mound on Sept. 12 against the light-hitting Diamondbacks in Arizona.
Bush was a victim of some bad luck, as he exhibited many of the characteristics needed for a quality start. He issued just two walks by throwing 48 of his 79 pitches for strikes. While not a fantastic percentage, it's not terrible. He didn't permit a homer and surrendered just two doubles, meaning nine of the hits he yielded went for singles. Finally, Bush gave up just four flyouts to a powerful Cardinals lineup, so chalk up Wednesday's outing as an effort which he can quickly overcome. He'll get another crack at the Cardinals, this time at Miller Park, on Sept. 7.
This bodes well for his name to fill in the "TBA" currently on the Brewers' pitching line for Aug. 27 when the team hosts Cincinnati. Overall, Bush threw 65 pitches in his latest Minor League outing and will be joining the club in D.C. on Monday, when he will throw on the side.
Bush struck out four in three scoreless, hitless innings on Tuesday at Class A Wisconsin but topped out at 86 mph, and the Brewers would like him to build more strength in another Minor League outing. If it goes well, he could take Burns' spot in the rotation on Aug. 27.
Hardly a surprise, considering Villanueva lasted only four innings and surrendered two home runs on the way to his 10th loss this season, ballooning his ERA to 6.25.
Burns last started on Saturday against the Astros, and allowed just two runs in seven innings for the win. Regardless, Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan are on their way back from injury and figure to replace Burns in the next couple of weeks.
After Suppan surrendered four runs in 3 1/3 innings at Class A Wisconsin on Saturday night, club officials decided he needed another outing. Suppan will start Aug. 20 for Triple-A Nashville, leaving him lined up to return to the Brewers' starting rotation on Aug. 25 against the Reds at Miller Park. Bush, meanwhile, is slated to start for Wisconsin on Aug. 18 and will follow with an outing for Double-A Huntsville on Aug. 22. That means he will be ready to return to the big league rotation on Aug. 27, the series finale against the Reds.
Assistant general manager Gord Ash labeled Bush's effort on Saturday as "excellent," so the righty will join Class A Wisconsin on Aug. 18 for a rehabilitation assignment. "From my eye, there was no trepidation in his release of the ball," manager Ken Macha said of Bush's effort on Saturday. "His cutter was cutting pretty well, and his sinker was sinking with good finish." Bush, who is 3-4 with a 5.67 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP, could help NL-only leaguers with his decent 6.6 K/9 rate.
If all goes well and he remains on schedule, Bush would be in line to return to the Brewers' rotation sometime during the week of Aug. 16. A rehab assignment could be imminent.
Bush, who has not pitched in a game since June 20 because of fatigue in his right arm, will probably throw one more bullpen session in Houston on Aug. 7 before heading out on what could be a one-game Minor League rehabilitation assignment. If he remains on schedule, it puts Bush in line to return to the rotation sometime during the week of Aug. 16.
Bush could be just two more mound sessions away from returning to Milwaukee's starting rotation. Bush, whose troubles date to a June 4 line drive off his arm, wasn't ready to look that far ahead. "We're going one step at a time," said Bush, though, "We're getting later in the year, so there's a little more urgency." He will play light catch on Monday at Dodger Stadium before taking the mound Tuesday for a more intense bullpen. After that, according to manager Ken Macha, Bush could be assigned to a Minor League affiliate for a two- or three-inning rehabilitation start. If all goes well, Bush's return could come at some point during the Brewers' Aug. 11-16 homestand.
Bush, who will travel with the Brewers on their road trip, is expected to sit down with members of the training staff to develop a more concrete schedule for his return. The right-hander has been on the DL since June 23.
