Fantasy Analysis
Orioles manager Dave Trembley expects Felix Pie to return from back spasms Tuesday. Pie missed his fourth straight game Monday.
The absence of Pie and Adam Jones has left the Orioles short-handed, with Jeff Fiorentino filling in as the center fielder. If Pie can't return over the next few days, other potential options Trembley included were Ty Wigginton and Robert Andino, both natural infielders. Pie was red-hot before he got hurt. The speedster was batting .324 (24-for-74) with 10 extra-base hits, 14 runs scored and 14 RBIs in his past 24 games.
Robert Andino went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI Saturday vs. the Yankees.
Despite making appearances in 18 games (13 starts) since July 6, Cesar Izturis' backup was unable to drive in a single runner during the 42 at-bats he accumulated during that time. Although Sunday's ribbie finally got him off the schneid, his .232 average and lack of speed, pop or frequent playing time make rostering the young infielder a stretch in any format.
Brian Roberts left Saturday's game with a left shin contusion.
Roberts left in the top of the third inning, but he experienced the injury in the game's initial frame when he fouled a ball off the inside part of his left shin, just above the ankle. Roberts ended up walking in that plate appearance and stayed in the game for the next two innings. When it was his time to come up in the third, Robert Andino was there to take his spot in the order and in the field. Roberts owners in daily leagues should search for a backup option at second base for Sunday.
Cesar Izturis (appendicitis) is scheduled to be back with the Orioles on Friday, July 10, for the opener of a three-game series against the Blue Jays
Izturis was hitting .260 with one home run, 13 RBIs and nine stolen bases before hitting the disabled list on July 7. Robert Andino, who has been filling in for Izturis, will continue to get a chance to play shortstop in a reserve role.
Cesar Izturis has been working on elementary baseball drills in the weeks since his emergency appendectomy, but he's still likely three weeks away from returning to the starting lineup.
Izturis, who hasn't played since June 3, said that he's made some progress over the past few weeks. The switch-hitting infielder said that he's been able to jog and sprint and take some practice swings in the batting cage. Izturis doesn't know when he'll be back but maintained that he isn't too far away. Robert Andino, who has a .243-1-7 line and a .279 on-base percentage in 115 at-bats, will continue to fill in at short until Izturis returns.
Robert Andino went 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored, three ribbies and a steal of home on Sunday.
Andino hasn't lit the world on fire since settling in at shortstop for the injured Cesar Izturis, hitting .257 with two doubles in 70 at-bats. Sunday's three-RBI outburst doubled the 25-year-old's '09 total to six. The career backup holds little fantasy value.
Cesar Izturis underwent a successful laproscopic appendectomy at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco on Friday night and will be lost for up to three weeks.
Izturis will go on the disabled list when the Orioles make a corresponding move in time for Sunday's series finale. All indications point toward Oscar Salazar getting the call. Robert Andino, currently hitting .220 with a .259 on-base percentage, will likely take over starting shortstop duties. The Orioles are 1-11 without the slick-fielding Izturis in the lineup this season.
Cesar Izturis was rushed to a local hospital with a case of appendicitis Friday after complaining of stomach pain.
Izturis arrived at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum early in the afternoon and then told team physicians of his symptoms. A CT scan confirmed the diagnosis. He was scheduled to undergo an appendectomy on Friday night, with a recovery time of 10 days to four weeks. Infielder Robert Andino should log some time at short in Izturis' absence, but the career part-time player does not hold any fantasy value.
Ryan Freel was helped off the field after getting plunked on the helmet by an errant pickoff throw from Boston's Justin Masterson in the third inning of Monday's game.
Freel, who was on second after a single and a groundout, lay face-down on the field for several minutes after getting hit. Freel was responsive in the dugout, but the Orioles still sent him to a nearby hospital for further testing. Baltimore replaced him with Robert Andino, who wound up going 0-for-3 with a run scored.
Baltimore enters the regular season with a projected lineup of second baseman Brian Roberts, center fielder Adam Jones, right fielder Nick Markakis, first baseman Aubrey Huff, third baseman Melvin Mora, designated hitter Luke Scott, catcher Greg Zaun, left fielder Felix Pie and shortstop Cesar Izturis in the ninth spot.
Baltimore's offense should be steady enough, considering the return of lineup linchpins Roberts and Markakis and the expected emergence of top prospect Matt Wieters sometime before the All-Star break. Outfielder Ryan Freel and left fielder/infielder Ty Wigginton should also help improve Baltimore's depth, helping the starters stay fresh late into the year. Other bench options include catcher Chad Moeller and infielder Robert Andino.
The Marlins traded infielder Robert Andino to the Orioles on Wednesday for right-hander Hayden Penn.
Both players were out of options, needed a change of scenery and got one. Penn reached the big leagues with the Orioles in 2005, and he's appeared in seven Grapefruit League games this spring, getting shelled for a 10.06 ERA in 17 innings. He'll pitch out of the bullpen. Andino has played in parts of four seasons with the Marlins, and he's also seen time at second base, third base and center field. In 2008, he batted .206 (13-for-63) with two homers and nine RBIs. He'll serve primarily as backup to second baseman Brian Roberts.
Dan Uggla wrapped up the 2008 season hitting .260 with 32 homers and 92 RBIs.
Uggla started off the year as one of the hottest players in the NL, batting .297 with 23 home runs in his first 70 games. But a rough showing in the All-Star Game and an ankle injury in late June preceded a tough second half. His free-swinging approach at the plate makes him a liability in the average department.
Demoted to Triple-A New Orleans on May 22 as a result of Jacque Jones' activation, infielder Robert Andino was recalled Saturday to replace Brett Carroll, who was placed on the disabled list with a separated right shoulder.
Not your everyday trip to the farm, as Andino's demotion lasted all of 12 hours. The 24-year-old utilityman, who's hitting .182 with two homers and three RBIs in 22 at-bats this season, will be used primarily in pinch-hitting situations, according to skipper Fredi Gonzalez.
Demoted to Triple-A New Orleans on May 22 to make room for new signee Jacque Jones, infielder Robert Andino was recalled Saturday to replace Brett Carroll, who was placed on the disabled list with a separated right shoulder.

The Marlins placed Brett Caroll on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Robert Andino from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday.
Carroll suffered a sprained right shoulder in Friday's game against the Giants after he crashed into the outfield wall. He was swollen on the right side of his face as well, and an X-ray revealed a Level 2 shoulder separation. Andino, a 24-year-old right-handed hitter, was optioned to Albuquerque after the Marlins recently acquired Jacque Jones. In 22 at-bats this season, Andino is batting just .182.
