Fantasy Analysis
Ricky Romero wrapped up his rookie season with a 13-9 record, a 4.30 ERA and a 141/79 K/BB ratio over 178 innings.
At the beginning of Spring Training, Romero looked like a long shot to make the Opening Day roster. The rookie was wild in his first few outings, but he worked to claim a rotation spot and looked like the AL Rookie of the Year favorite when the All-Star break arrived. But the talented lefty labored down the stretch, demonstrating that he'll need to show more consistency to build on his rookie output.
Ricky Romero gave up four earned runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings of eight-K ball in a no-decision vs. the Orioles on Sunday.
That was just the third time in 29 starts that Romero racked up eight or more punchouts, so the season ends on a fairly positive note despite the four earned runs. The home run he served up was just the second he permitted in 52 2/3 innings over his final nine starts.
Ricky Romero gave up four earned runs on seven hits and four walks with six Ks in six frames as he fell to 12-9 in a Saturday matchup against the Rays.
Romero did well to induce nine groundouts and keep the Rays' lineup from recording an extra-base hit. However, he caused some anguish for himself by continuing his control struggles. He's issued at least three walks in each of his four September starts, which has led to him posting a 1-3 record for the month. He's a risky option even against a mediocre Mariners lineup on Sept. 24 at Rogers Centre.
Ricky Romero surrendered four runs on 10 hits and three walks over six frames with four strikeouts Sunday in a loss to the Tigers.
Romero wasn't particularly economical with his pitches early in his loss to fellow AL Rookie of the Year Award candidate Rick Porcello. In fact, there were too many times where the first-year hurler left his pitches up in the hitting zone as the Tigers socked out double-digit hits on the afternoon. Romero's three free passes also came back to haunt him as two of the runners that he put on eventually came around to score. Romero will go for his 13th win of the season, which would be a Blue Jays record, when he next takes the rock on Sept. 19 vs. the Rays.
Ricky Romero was lit up for five earned runs on six hits and six walks over 4 1/3 innings against the Yankees on Thursday before falling to 11-7.
Leaving Romero in your lineup has become far too risky as fatigue sets in. A 6.00 ERA since the All-Star break says it all. It's time to part ways with the talented but worn down lefty.
Ricky Romero surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings vs. the Red Sox to fall to 11-6 on Saturday.
Romero didn't allow a flyout or a home run, so he did well to make the job a bit easier for his defense. He forced the Red Sox into nine groundouts, too. Of course, he struggled with his command by throwing just 62 of his 116 pitches for strikeouts. That's not going to work against a powerful Rangers offense on Sept. 2 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, so consider Romero a risky spot start on that day.
Ricky Romero picked up a win Sunday, holding the powerful Angels offense to two runs on eight hits and a pair of walks and a couple of strikeouts over six frames.
Romero followed up a 12-start stretch during which he went 8-2 with a 3.29 ERA with an equally brutal three-start run that saw him go 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA. The struggling rookie picked a fine time to harness his top-shelf stuff, mastering the Majors' most prolific offensive unit. Despite these positive developments, Romero is a risky start when he next takes the mound on Aug. 29 against the Red Sox, a team that has drilled him for 14 runs and dealt him a pair of defeats in three starts this year.
Ricky Romero struck out five and allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks in a six-inning no-decision Wednesday against the Yankees.
If there’s a rookie wall, Romero certainly hasn’t hit it yet. The talented southpaw has gone a month without a dominant outing, but he continues to post lines right around the quality start markers (6 IP, 3 ER) nearly every time out.
Ricky Romero was sharp Sunday, limiting the A’s to two earned runs on eight hits with a walk and five Ks to move to 10-4.
A very good outing for Romero, who had given up four earned runs in each of his last three starts. He averaged only five innings per start during the mediocre stretch, which he appears to have put behind him with his 12th outing of three earned runs or fewer. The rookie southpaw will tote an excellent 3.53 ERA into his next start on Aug. 9 vs. the Orioles.
Ricky Romero allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings against Seattle on Monday and earned his ninth win.
Romero has come back to earth somewhat after the seven-start June/July stretch in which he posted a 5-1 record and 2.22 ERA and struck out 45 over 48 2/3 innings. The good news is that his record doesn't really reflect it -- despite allowing 22 baserunners in his last 11 1/3 innings, Romero is riding a two-game winning streak. Fantasy owners would love to see the old Romero, but they'll be happy to see the new, lucky Romero when he takes the mound in Oakland on Aug. 2.
Ricky Romero finished the first half 7-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 87 innings.
Romero has vaulted himself to the forefront of most AL Rookie of the Year discussions by going 5-1 with a 2.38 ERA over eight consecutive quality starts. The left-hander will likely need to cut down his walks or increase his strikeouts to maintain that level of production, but it's quite possible he'll be able to make those adjustments as he becomes more comfortable at the Major League level.
Ricky Romero allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over eight innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Orioles.
Romero has been on a role lately, as Saturday's performance marked his eighth quality start in as many turns. The AL Rookie of the Year candidate has established himself as a must-own in all leagues as he carries a 7-3 record and a 3.00 ERA into the All-Star break.
Ricky Romero picked up his seventh win of the season Monday, tossing 6 1/3 innings of seven-hit, three-run, ball with five strikeouts and three walks against the Yankees.
It was the seventh consecutive quality start for the rookie, who is quickly earning owners' trust in all formats. Romero showed impressive poise by wiggling out of several jams and limiting New York's offensive damage despite not having his best command. With at least five strikeouts in every start since May 31, the left-hander is well worth using against the Orioles in his next turn, July 11 at Camden Yards.
Ricky Romero struck out seven and let up four hits and four walks over eight shutout innings against Tampa Bay to improve his record to 6-3 Wednesday.
This makes 20 consecutive scoreless innings and counting for Romero, who seems to have finally harnessed the talent that made him the sixth overall selection in the 2005 amateur draft. The rookie left-hander was at his best Wednesday, throwing 64% of his pitches for strikes and recording 12 outs via the ground ball. His next start comes July 6 in homer-happy Yankee Stadium, but Romero has good enough stuff (at least 7 Ks in 3 of his past 4 starts) to make him worth using.
Ricky Romero was dealing Sunday, giving up two earned runs on eight hits with three walks and six Ks over seven frames to up his mark to 4-3.
Good work from Romero, who kept the ball in the yard after getting touched for eight homers over his last five starts. The young hurler has settled down since a poor outing on May 31, going 2-1 in four starts with a 2.30 ERA, while posting a 26/9 K/BB mark. As sharp as he's been, owners may want to proceed with a bit of caution going forward, as his next start will come against a powerful Phillies lineup on June 27.
