Fantasy Analysis
Gordon Beckham will move over from third base to second in 2010.
The change was facilitated by the White Sox acquisition of Mark Teahen from the Royals on Friday, with starting second baseman Chris Getz and Josh Fields moving on to Kansas City. From a fantasy perspective, the move bodes especially well for Beckham, who will ultimately qualify at second base and third next year instead of third exclusively.
On Friday, the White Sox traded infielders Chris Getz and Josh Fields to the Royals for infielder/outfielder Mark Teahen and cash considerations.
This news was announced shortly after the White Sox parted ways with Jermaine Dye, so it appears likely that Teahen, who hit .271 with 12 homers and 50 RBIs in '09, will take over right field for the South Siders. Things aren't quite as clear for the Royals, who already have Alex Gordon at third and Alberto Callaspo at second. Callaspo batted .300 with 11 homers and 73 RBIs this past season, but the Royals are reportedly looking for a defensive upgrade at second, and Getz (25 SB in '09) would also infuse the lineup with a dose of speed. Gordon was tabbed as a cornerstone-type player when he first joined the Royals in '07, but he's yet to take off offensively, and he stumbled to a .232 average, six jacks and 22 RBIs in an injury-shortened '09 campaign. Fields, who blasted 23 homers as a rookie in '07 but finished with a .222-7-30 line this past season, may primarily serve as an insurance option in case Gordon gets hurt again.
Neither the Royals nor the White Sox would confirm or deny a reported trade that would send utilityman Mark Teahen to Chicago and second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields to Kansas City.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore sent word before noon Thursday through the team's public relations department that there was "nothing to report right now." Just what such a deal would mean for Kansas City's Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo, the incumbents at third base and second base respectively, is not clear. Gordon, who missed much of the season after hip surgery, is one of the Royals' top hitting hopes for the future. Callaspo's .300 mark was accompanied by 73 RBIs and a surprising 11 homers, eight triples and 41 doubles. Getz could step in at short, pushing Callaspo over to shortstop, while Fields could DH or serve as a bat off the bench.
Mark Teahen wrapped up the year holding a .271 average with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs.
Teahen has proven to be a steady offensive contributor throughout his five Major League seasons while offering the flexibility of playing both third base and the outfield. On the other hand, with Alex Gordon returning to third base permanently, Teahen's days may be numbered in a Royals uniform.
Outfielders David DeJesus (right ankle) and Mark Teahen (lower back) were held out of the Royals lineup Monday.
With rain soaking the field in Kansas City on Monday afternoon, manager Trey Hillman decided to give the two players the night off. Of the two, DeJesus is the closest to returning. "If it was dry, [DeJesus] could probably push it a little bit and go, but it's still a little sore," Hillman said.
Third baseman/outfielder Mark Teahen rejoined the Royals for Tuesday night's game after traveling to Kansas City for an evaluation of lower back tightness.
Teahen didn't play Tuesday, but he's available to play. "It was just muscle spasms, so it was a positive report for us," manager Trey Hillman said. "He's available, but he's going to stay inside [during batting practice] and do some work today. We've got him available for the game if we need him."
Mark Teahen flew back to Kansas City to get evaluated by team doctors after he was scratched from Saturday's game against the Indians with lower back spasms.
The spasms popped up after he attempted to backhand a ground ball during batting practice. "Best-case scenario, he'll meet us in Detroit," Royals skipper Trey Hillman said. "We just don't know right now. He was hurting." Mitch Maier should continue to hang on to right-field duties while Teahen is unable to suit up.
Mitch Maier slapped a pair of singles, scored once and drove in a runner Sunday.
Injuries to Mark Teahen and Jose Guillen have pressed Maier into more of a fulltime role in right field for the Royals, but he has yet to make a distinctive mark on the club. The 27-year-old has gotten on base at a decent rate (.333 OBP) but his .251 average and punchless .360 slugging percentage don't suggest that he'll be of much use other than to owners in very deep AL-only leagues.
Mark Teahen blasted his 11th homer, a solo shot, in four at-bats on Saturday.
Teahen's been swinging a solid bat over his last 12 games, going .311 with six extra-base hits and five RBIs. It's likely to end with the Royals' impending trip to Oakland, where he holds a .214 batting average with a lowly .576 OPS.
Mark Teahen went 3-for-4 with one RBI Saturday night against the Twins.
Starting in all of the last five Royals games, Teahen has gone 8-for-19, good for a .421 average. With third baseman Alex Gordon down on the farm temporarily, this could be the 27-year-old's last chance of proving he deserves an everyday job.
Mark Teahen is batting .278 with nine homers and 39 runs this season.
Teahen has slipped into an extended funk this month, batting just .213 with three RBIs. Despite the slump, he’s maintained his value in deeper mixed leagues by lacing 28 doubles and crossing the plate 56 times on the season.
The Royals optioned third baseman Alex Gordon to Triple-A Omaha before Tuesday's game against the White Sox and reinstated reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the 15-day DL to take his spot on the active roster.
Gordon was batting just .227 with two homers and eight RBIs in in 22 games since returning from a three-month DL stint. The hope is that Gordon will get his stroke back in the Minors and return to the big club at some point during September. Mark Teahen will take over at third base in the interim. Farnsworth had been on the DL since June 24 due to strained groin muscle.
Mark Teahen went 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored Monday against the Rays.
With nine home runs and a .287 average, Teahen is right on pace to reach the high end of his preseason projections. His eligibility at multiple positions makes him a valuable player in deep mixed leagues.
Alex Gordon was not in the Royals' starting lineup Monday against Tampa Bay.
Mark Teahen started at third base and Ryan Freel opened Monday's game in right field. Manager Trey Hillman is sticking to his plan of giving Gordon plenty of days off following the third baseman's return from hip surgery. Gordon, who is 9-for-39 (.231 AVG) with three RBIs since coming off the DL July 17, has just one hit in his last four games.
Mark Teahen went 1-for-2 before leaving Saturday's game in the fifth inning with muscle tightness in his lower back.
The move was viewed as a precautionary measure. "It's all right," Teahen said. "It wasn't that it came on with anything extra today. I've been battling it and it just wasn't getting any looser." Mitch Maier entered the game as Teahen's replacement, moving into center field as Willie Bloomquist slid over to right field to cover for Teahen.
