Rockies' Pomeranz strikes out five in 5 2/3 frames

It's been an unbelievable season for the reigning World Series champions.

It just hasn't been the most memorable.

The Giants experienced an unusually high number of key injuries this year, made huge Trade Deadline deals and were struck with several season-ending injuries. They also enjoyed the incredible comeback story of Ryan Vogelsong, the strong season by a slimmed-down Pablo Sandoval, and fantastic starting pitching from one of the best starting rotations in the game.

But in the end, it was not enough. San Francisco's offseason will begin following Wednesday's season finale against the Rockies.

The Giants will send Erik Surkamp to the mound in the last game of the season. The Rockies will counter with Drew Pomeranz.

Pomeranz, who arrived in Colorado from Cleveland in the Ubaldo Jimenez deal, had an ERA below 2.00 before struggling Friday night at Minute Maid Park against the Astros. He pitched well against the Giants in a previous start.

Rockies: Fowler makes most of second chance
Dexter Fowler has hit .286 with 22 doubles, 10 triples, five home runs, 26 RBIs and 49 runs scored in 67 games since he was recalled from Triple-A on July 15.

• Eric Young Jr. went 0-for-4 on Tuesday to snap his season-high seven-game hitting streak. He hit .367 during the run.

Giants: Burrell's swan song?
Giants left fielder Pat Burrell will start against the Colorado Rockies in Wednesday's season finale in what could be the last appearance of his career.

Burrell, who is still bothered by the strained right foot that limited him to 91 games, has started just twice since being reinstated from the disabled list on Aug. 31.

"I don't know what's going to happen after this year," Burrell said. "Obviously, if there was something at stake, like the playoffs, I wouldn't ask. Now that we're kind of out of it, I politicked my way into [starting Wednesday]. ... I just want to play. My foot's not really better, but it's one game. I appreciate the chance."

• According to Elias, Vogelsong is the second pitcher in the last 50 years to have 13 or more wins in a season at age 30 or older after not appearing in a Major League game for the previous four years. Cuban defector Rolando Arrojo went 14-12 for the Devil Rays in 1998.

Worth noting
• The Giants are 13-4 against the Rockies this season.

• Young is batting .288 this month.
