Pedro ready to take center stage

Johan Santana is a tough act to follow, but Pedro Martinez just might pull it off. Martinez takes the hill on Tuesday against the Marlins in Miami at 7:10 p.m. ET.

If Martinez was upset about losing his ace status to Johan Santana, he wasn't about to complain. Instead, he has said all the right things in regard to his new teammate, and now, he'll finally have a chance to back up those words on the mound. Set to start the season's second game against the Marlins, Martinez will also be embarking on what he hopes can be his first full season since 2005. Right rotator cuff surgery cut short the end of his 2006 season, after he missed nearly all of last summer recovering from the same operation. For his career, Martinez is 6-6 with a 2.85 ERA against the Marlins.

Marlins aim to draw even with Mets

With the fanfare of Opening Day behind them, the Marlins hope to rebound on Tuesday as Rick VandenHurk takes the mound against the Mets at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Marlins probable pitcher

Rick VandenHurk

A 22-year-old from the Netherlands, VandenHurk got a taste of the big leagues last year when he was called up in early April because of an injury situation. He ended up making 17 starts and appearing in 18 games for Florida in his rookie season. The right-hander endured some predictable growing pains at the big league level. To get him more seasoning, he also pitched in '07 at Double-A and Triple-A. In all, he threw a career-high 147 1/3 innings a year ago.

Andino's timely walk-off (1-1) (1-1)

Marlins 5, Mets 4 (10)

Two losses in one

Not only did the Mets drop a heartbreaking extra-innings loss to the Marlins on a Robert Andino walk-off homer, but they also lost starter Pedro Martinez to a left hamstring injury in the fourth inning.

Perfect timing

Robert Andino's first Major League homer was a sweet one, as the third baseman hit a walk-off shot off Mets reliever Matt Wise in the 10th inning to give the Marlins their first victory of the 2008 season.
