Davis set to make courageous start

In a way, Thursday's game between the D-backs and Reds will be a form of therapy for Arizona starter Doug Davis. The left-hander found out last week he has thyroid cancer and will need surgery April 10 to have it removed.

Davis was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last week and will make his first two starts of the season before undergoing surgery April 10. The left-hander posted a double-digit win total for the fourth year in a row in 2007. Davis had a habit last year of working his way into and then out of trouble. One thing you can usually count on from Davis is innings. Last year he worked six or more frames in 19 of his 33 starts and was 11-4 with a 2.30 ERA in those games. Davis has plenty of experience against the Reds from his days with the Brewers and is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 14 career games against them.

Davis off the mark

In his first start since being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, Doug Davis lacked his best stuff, fanning four but walking six in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. Justin Upton gave the D-backs their first baserunner with a homer to lead off the sixth.

Astonishing debut

Johnny Cueto has arrived. Making his big league debut, the 22-year-old righty lost a perfect game in the sixth inning on his way to a 10-strikeout, seven-inning masterpiece in which he allowed just one baserunner. Jeff Keppinger homered to back Cueto.
