Shields aims to forget last Bronx start

James Shields' last start was a rough outing, but he hopes to put that behind him on Sunday. He'll take the ball as the Rays pursue a sweep of the Yanks at 1:05 p.m. ET.

  • #33 RHP
  • (1-0) 2.57 ERA 2 SO
After a rough beginning in which Shields surrendered two runs in the first inning on Opening Day against the Orioles, Shields settled in to add six scoreless frames to earn the win. Shields' best pitch has always been his changeup, but he also has a plus fastball and curve and he's added a cutter that has helped him throw inside to left-handers. Shields is 0-4 with an 8.58 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees; he is 0-2 with a 10.57 ERA in three starts at Yankee Stadium.

Yanks expecting bats to come alive

Chien-Ming Wang goes after his second win of the season when the Yankees battle the Rays at 1:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees probable pitcher

Chien-Ming Wang

  • #40 RHP
  • (1-0) 2.57 ERA 2 SO
Wang's regular season debut was his best start of the year so far, according to manager Joe Girardi, who wasn't putting much stock into Wang's shaky Grapefruit League campaign. The right-hander limited the Blue Jays to two runs over seven innings as he secured the victory in the final Opening Day at Yankee Stadium on April 1. Wang made three starts against the Rays in 2007, faring 2-1 with a 4.42 ERA. His best start was his final one of the campaign, twirling six innings of two-run, seven-hit ball at Tropicana Field on Sept. 26. The sinkerballing Wang is 27-9 at Yankee Stadium since the beginning of the 2005 campaign.

Shields sharp in loss

Entering Sunday afternoon, James Shields had never beaten the Yankees. He still hasn't done so, but he came close, limiting the Bronx Bombers to just two runs on Hideki Matsui's two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Wang's start a wow

Chien-Ming Wang looked in midseason form on Sunday as he ended the Yankees' two-game skid with emphasis. Wang, who threw four frames of no-hit ball, held the Rays scoreless on just four hits over six-plus innings.
