Cubs plan to rest Wood on Monday

With closer Kerry Wood expected to rest Monday, the Cubs will be looking for a strong start by Ted Lilly when they face the Pirates at 12:35 p.m. CT.

Ted Lilly

Lilly will be careful with his first pitch. Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks launched Lilly's first offering this season over the left-field wall in the lefty's last start. Lilly took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. He did strike out four. He struggled with his fastball -- he didn't have command or location. That's a bad combination.

Pirates to face Cubs in home opener

The Pirates kick off their season at home when they face the Cubs at 1:35 p.m. ET at PNC Park, as Tom Gorzelanny looks to get his first win of the season.

Pirates probable pitcher

Tom Gorzelanny

  • #24 LHP
  • (0-1) 4.50 ERA 3 SO
After giving Ian Snell the Opening Day start, manager John Russell gave Gorzelanny the start in the team's home opener. Gorzelanny wasn't at his sharpest in his first outing of the season, though to his credit, the left-hander managed to limit the damage to just three runs in six innings. Hitters consistently went deep into the count against the left-hander, and his command was somewhat erratic throughout the night.

Cubs hold on

The Cubs took an early seven-run lead only to watch the Pirates claw their way back to send the game to extra innings. But in the 12th inning, Aramis Ramirez put his former team away for good with a go-ahead sacrifice fly.

Comeback falls short

The Pirates rallied from a seven-run deficit to send the game to extra innings in their home opener, and they nearly pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in recent team history before the Cubs put two runs on the board in the 12th.
