Hughes opens Yanks' lengthy trip

Blame the schedule makers for this stretch, but it won't do much good. The Yankees are about to adjust to life almost exclusively on the road, whether they're looking forward to it or not. Eighteen of their next 20 games are away from home. The long road stretch begins on Tuesday, when the Yankees play the first of three games in Kansas City.

Yankees probable pitcher

Phil Hughes

  • #65 RHP
  • (0-0) 3.00 ERA 4 SO
Hughes will make his second start of the season after taking a no-decision in his first start against Toronto, holding the Blue Jays to two runs and four hits over six innings. After the game, manager Joe Girardi complimented Hughes' ability to spot his fastball and throw his curveball for strikes. Hughes will be making his second career start against the Royals, who tagged him for six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings last Aug. 4.

Royals hosting Yanks in home opener

Trey Hillman is set for his Kansas City debut, returning home with his Royals to face the Yankees in the opener at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday at 3:10 p.m. CT.

Royals probable pitcher

Brian Bannister

  • #19 RHP
  • (1-0) 0.00 ERA 4 SO
Bannister couldn't have been better in his 2008 debut against the vaunted Tigers lineup. He worked seven shutout innings and gave up just two singles, both to Edgar Renteria. He had no walks and four strikeouts. Bannister mixed his pitches masterfully, in and out, hard and soft. Now, in the Royals' home opener, he faces another tough lineup in the Yankees, a club that smacked him around for seven runs in five innings in their only face-off last season.

Home runners: Royals steal win (4-4) (5-2)

Royals 5, Yankees 2

Trip starts poorly

The Yankees opened an eight-game road trip with a loss in Kansas City behind Phil Hughes, who struggled with his control and handed off to the bullpen with nobody out in the fourth inning. Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter sat out with injuries, and Alex Rodriguez struck out four times.

Bannister keeps cool

The Royals improved to 5-2 with a win in their home opener, receiving five gritty innings from Brian Bannister, who weathered a 39-pitch second inning on his way to a 2-0 start. Joey Gathright had three of the Royals' five stolen bases and scored a pair of runs.
