Phillies' offense to be tested by Mets

The Phillies were in dire need of some positive karma before heading to New York to begin a three-game series against the Mets, and the offense arrived in Monday's series finale against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Phillies probable pitcher

Jamie Moyer

  • #50 LHP
  • (0-0) 7.36 ERA 3 SO
The venerable lefty didn't have a very good start to his 22nd Major League season, and lasted only 3 2/3 innings. Five of the six runs scored off him came in the first inning, though he wasn't helped by two errors. He's gone 3-3 with a 2.59 ERA in eight starts at Shea Stadium, and 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA in 14 career starts against the Mets.

Perez to open final season at Shea

Oliver Perez will take the ball Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. ET in the final Opening Day at Shea Stadium. Perez and the Mets will be opposed by veteran Jamie Moyer and the Phillies.

Mets probable pitcher

Oliver Perez

  • LHP
  • (1-0) 0.00 ERA 8 SO
Perez's '08 debut was a lopsided affair and not only because the Mets scored 13 runs behind him. He buried the Marlins, allowing five singles and a walk and striking out eight in six shutout innings. He'll have five days' rest when he pitches the Mets' opening home game, as Pedro Martinez's stand in, against a team that beat him twice in three games last season.

Late rally lifts Phillies

Held in check by Mets starter Oliver Perez for 5 2/3 innings, the Phils broke through with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Jayson Werth's tiebreaking RBI single, and notched their first win in eight tries on Opening Day at Shea Stadium.

Mets let one slip away

In the last Opening Day at Shea Stadium, the Mets held a late two-run lead, but the relief corps allowed three runs in the seventh, and the hosts could not rally. Carlos Delgado belted his first homer of '08, but also committed a costly error.
