Rox' Francis looking for better results

Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis has not fared well at PETCO Park in his career, going 3-5 with a 5.44 ERA. He will look for better results when the Rockies take on the Padres at 8:05 p.m. MT on Thursday in the rubber game of a three-game series.

Francis has to be happy to see anybody but the Diamondbacks, who have hit five home runs against him in his two starts this season. Francis has thrown a fair number of strikes, but not the quality of strikes that could keep the ball in the park against the D-backs' lineup. So he moves to PETCO Park and the Padres, who got the best of him last year (1-3, 6.61 ERA in five starts).

Padres right-hander Jake Peavy is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA after three starts, even though he didn't have his best stuff when he faces the Dodgers his last time out. Peavy takes on the Rockies at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday in the finale of a three-game series.

Jake Peavy

  • (3-0) 1.64 ERA 16 SO
Peavy didn't always have his best stuff, but he got better as the game went on in his last start against the Dodgers on Friday. He allowed seven hits and two runs over the first three innings, but just one run on two hits over the last three innings. Peavy, who is off to a 3-0 start, walked two and struck out four and defeated the Dodgers for the second time this season. He now faces the Rockies for the first time since the Padres lost the Wild Card play-in game in Denver on Oct. 1.

Match-22: Rockies outlast Friars (7-8) (8-8)

Rockies 2, Padres 1 (22)

Tulo has game-winner

If the Rockies were going to play the longest game in franchise history, they were going to make sure to come away with a win. After Brad Hawpe's walk drove in the first run in the 14th, the Padres matched it with Josh Bard's RBI single. But San Diego mustered no answer for Troy Tulowitzki's RBI double in the 22nd inning.

Padres drop epic

The longest Major League game since Aug. 31, 1993, became an epic showdown, with the Padres leaving 14 men on base to the Rockies' 16. Unfortunately for the home team, someone had to lose, and though San Diego's Josh Bard was able to answer Colorado's run in the 13th inning, nobody could do so in the 22nd.
