Lannan the latest lefty to face Mets

John Lannan -- the team's third southpaw in a row -- hopes to do what the other two couldn't, which is to help the Nationals beat the Mets on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Nationals probable pitcher

John Lannan

  • #31 LHP
  • (0-2) 6.75 ERA 6 SO
Lannan had nothing in the tank as he gave up six runs in four innings against the Braves last Saturday. Jeff Francouer did most of the damage, driving in five runs against the youngster. Lannan acknowledged that he didn't follow pitching coach Randy St. Claire's gameplan and he paid the price. After the game, Lannan spent almost an hour watching video with St. Claire.

The back of the Mets' rotation has been solid, especially Mike Pelfrey, and Nelson Figueroa hopes to continue that on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. ET vs. the Nats at Shea.

Mets probable pitcher

Nelson Figueroa

  • #27 RHP
  • (1-0) 4.50 ERA 7 SO
Figueroa made an emotional start in front of his hometown crowd last Friday night, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and ultimately winning his first decision since 2003. He was efficient with his pitches, throwing first-pitch strikes with a fastball that rested around 87 miles per hour. The effort was enough to earn him a start against the Nationals, whom he's never faced. The last time Figueroa spent time in the Major Leagues, they were the Expos, and he produced a 2.81 ERA in four career starts against them.

Mets visit the Big Easley (4-12) (8-6)

Mets 3, Nationals 2 (14)

Nats' luck runs out

Talk about a homecoming: Long Island native John Lannan fanned 11 batters in six innings while allowing just one run. However, the Mets rallied to tie the game at 2 in the eighth, and six innings later, Joel Hanrahan's bases-loaded wild pitch signaled the end for the Nats.

Mets win in 14

Nelson Figueroa was solid once again, but the Mets trailed until Carlos Delgado's RBI singled tied the game at 2. In the 14th inning, Damion Easley singled, got to third on a wild pitch and an error, and then scored on another wild pitch to finish off a sweep of the Nationals.
