Yanks beginning to see offense click

Instead of taking a sense of panic and urgency into a three-game series in Chicago, the Yankees bring to U.S. Cellular Field a renewed faith that their offense will come around against the American League Central-leading White Sox.

Yankees probable pitcher

Chien-Ming Wang

  • RHP
  • (3-0) 3.81 ERA
Yankees: It wasn't pretty for Wang on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, where he was unable to make it through the fifth inning during a home game for the first time in his big league career. Facing the Red Sox for the second time this season, Wang couldn't command the strike zone and tied a career high with eight runs allowed in a no-decision. It was just the fifth time in 84 career starts that Wang did not go at least five innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in three career starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

Slugfests likely when Sox meet Yanks

Although Tuesday's storyline will undoubtedly mention White Sox starter Jose Contreras, who spent two seasons in New York with the Yankees, the matchup of two offense-heavy clubs should make for interesting fodder as well.

White Sox probable pitcher

Jose Contreras

  • RHP
  • (1-1) 4.34 ERA
White Sox: Contreras picked up his first victory in '08 with a show of resounding dominance on the mound and not much offensive support behind him. The big right-hander made Jim Thome's three-run home run in the first inning stand up over seven, as he allowed one run, before giving way to Scott Linebrink and Bobby Jenks after 91 pitches. Contreras struck out six and yielded four hits, but most importantly, he did not issue a single walk. Contreras, who pitched for the Yankees during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, has a 2-4 record against his original big-league employer.

Abreu delivers KO

Bobby Abreu lifted a two-out grand slam to the seats in left field in the seventh inning to give the Yankees the series opener. Chien-Ming Wang had to battle but picked up his fourth win against no losses. Johnny Damon added a three-run homer and Jason Giambi hit solo shot.

Dotel victimized

Octavio Dotel nearly escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh but was unable to completely shut the door. Jose Contreras was effective for 6 1/3 innings but was saddled with the loss. Juan Uribe and Paul Konerko had run-scoring doubles for the White Sox.
