Blue Jays turn to Halladay vs. Red Sox

The Blue Jays' losing streak is over, but they now head to Boston for a tough three-game set with the Red Sox. Roy Halladay will face Jon Lester in the opener on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

Blue Jays: Halladay turned in a complete game against Tampa Bay on Wednesday -- his third consecutive complete effort. For the second start in a row, though, Toronto's ace picked up a hard-luck loss. Despite going the distance, Halladay was on the wrong side of the decision after yielding five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Halladay's three complete games this season rank first in the Majors. In his career against the Red Sox, Halladay is 10-10 with a 4.81 ERA in 33 games.

Bats look to get hot

With 20 straight games in their rearview mirror, the Red Sox not only deserved an off-day, the club flat-out needed one.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Jon Lester

  • LHP
  • (1-2) 5.40 ERA
Red Sox: Lester has been unable to get on any type of roll. In his last start, however, the Sox were grateful that he was able to step up on three days rest on short notice and pitch in place of the ill Daisuke Matsuzaka. Lester gave the Sox five innings and allowed nine hits and four runs, taking no decision against the Angels. He threw 80 pitches, 48 of which were strikes. Lester has allowed 37 hits while walking 19 and striking out 16 over 31 2/3 innings.

Youk-reka: Sox end slide (11-16) (16-12)

Red Sox 1, Blue Jays 0

Unlucky Doc

Roy Halladay was again money on the mound, but the ace's fourth straight complete game wasn't enough to beat the Red Sox. With his offense held in check, Halladay gave up a walk-off single to Kevin Youkilis in the ninth to end the ballgame.

Walk-off buster

The Red Sox were able to preserve Jon Lester's brilliant start against the Jays when Kevin Youkilis produced a two-out walk-off single off Roy Halladay, who hurled a complete game, in the ninth inning to end Boston's five-game losing streak.
