Molina's defense key for hot Cardinals

Yadier Molina's great throw helped the Cardinals win their homestand finale, and they'll be looking for more solid defense Monday against the Rockies.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Joel Pineiro

  • RHP
  • (2-2) 3.75 ERA
Cardinals: Pineiro showed that he knows how to pitch with a big lead. After a rocky beginning to his last game, he came out firing once he got a seven-run lead. It led to a lot of hard contact, but only one walk over the final five innings. Control has been Pineiro's key since he's come to St. Louis. He's thrown strikes consistently, and it's worked out.

Jimenez pitching to keep rotation spot

The Rockies have lost five of Ubaldo Jimenez's six starts, including the last four. The decisions went to relievers in each of Jimenez's last three outings, but he has been consistently inconsistent since his only victory, back on April 8.

Rockies probable pitcher

Ubaldo Jimenez

  • RHP
  • (1-2) 5.90 ERA
Rockies: Jimenesz's spot in the rotation was in jeopardy before he turned in an encouraging 5 1/3 innings during which he gave up three hits, including a home run, and finished with a no-decision in the Rockies' 3-2 loss to the Giants on Wednesday. By being able to repeat his delivery, Jimenez had his liveliest fastball of the year and was able to change speeds and throw his breaking ball.

Cards persevere

Albert Pujols showed off his instincts in the ninth, scurrying home from second on a groundout to score the winning run. Jason Iringhausen came on in the ninth to shut the door on the back-and-forth affair, picking up his 11th save.

Rox come up short

The Rockies fought tough all night, but couldn't get over the top against the Cards, falling when Albert Pujols scored from second on a groundout in the ninth. Brad Hawpe hit his third homer of the season, while Brian Fuentes took the loss.
