Cubs could add extra arm to bullpen

The Cubs will continue their three-game series vs. the Reds on Tuesday in Cincinnati, and they could call up an additional relief pitcher this weekend.

Cubs probable pitcher

Carlos Zambrano

  • RHP
  • (4-1) 2.11 ERA
Cubs: Zambrano should have gotten the win in his last start against Milwaukee if not for Kerry Wood blowing a 3-1 lead in the ninth. Zambrano helped himself, hitting his 13th career home run, a solo shot. He is now tied with Fergie Jenkins for most home runs all-time by a Cubs pitcher. Against the Brewers, Zambrano gave up one run on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. He developed a small blister on his right hand, but said he didn't think it would keep him from pitching. He picked up a win against the Reds on April 16 at Wrigley, giving up two runs on eight hits over seven innings.

Adam Dunn hit a tape-measure homer in the series opener, and the Reds are hoping he'll be able to build off of the blast Tuesday against the Cubs.

Reds probable pitcher

Aaron Harang

  • RHP
  • (1-4) 2.98 ERA
Reds: Winless in his last four starts, Harang pitched six innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Cardinals. He allowed three earned runs and seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. In this season's previous start vs. the Cubs on April 15 at Wrigley Field, it wasn't a great day for Harang. He gave up five earned runs and eight hits over six innings while battling through a cold.

Cubs toss shutout

Carlos Zambrano improved to 5-1 with his latest dominating performance, blanking the Reds on three hits over eight innings to lift the Cubs to a shutout win. Aramis Ramirez, after missing three games with a sore wrist, hit an RBI single and scored on Ronny Cedeno's two-run knock.

Reds draw blank

Aaron Harang's winless streak ran to five games, but it wasn't due to performance. The ace tossed seven strong innings, limiting the Cubs to three runs, but the Reds managed just four hits in the shutout. Harang had one of the knocks, while Ken Griffey Jr. notched two.
