Kennedy enjoying bounce-back year

With the Cardinals playing well as a team in the early going, it's easy to overlook the stellar play of Adam Kennedy, who had a tough 2007 campaign.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Braden Looper

  • RHP
  • (4-1) 3.86 ERA
Cardinals: Looper has one bad start this year, but a couple of times now he's done the one thing he wasn't able to do last year: He's showing an ability to get by when he doesn't have his best stuff or command. Last year, he alternated good outings with brutal ones, as he wasn't able to survive when he wasn't sharp. This time, in six games, he has only one true clunker. That's a perfectly fine ratio, and one he'll try to keep up.

Rox have options in center against Cards

The Rockies have a trio of center fielders who are getting the job done, but with the Cards going exclusively with righty starters, Scott Podsednik could see plenty of action.

Rockies probable pitcher

Mark Redman

  • LHP
  • (2-2) 6.99 ERA
Rockies: The good thing for Redman in his last start was the six scoreless innings he threw against the Dodgers on Saturday. The bad thing was he gave 10 runs in the first inning. Redman became unnerved after walking in a run in the middle of the inning. He didn't have much of a fastball and his changeup wasn't fooling hitters. Poor beginnings are an issue for him. But the next start is a shot at redemption in a different venue -- Coors Field.

Cards throw Rox for a Loop (22-12) (12-21)

Cardinals 6, Rockies 5

Looper does it all

On a night the Cards badly needed to rest their bullpen, Braden Looper turned in a heroic effort. He not only pitched 8 1/3 innings for his fifth win, but he ignited a three-run rally and drove in another run with a single. Rick Ankiel added a homer and threw out two runners on the bases.

Redman hit hard

Mark Redman has struggled in the early innings this season, and Tuesday was no exception as the lefty allowed five runs and could not make it through the third inning. Chris Iannetta homered and added a two-run double in the ninth inning as a frantic rally fell short against the Cardinals.
