Scherzer psyched for Wrigley start

Missouri native Max Scherzer will take the mound for the D-backs on Saturday, making his first appearance at Wrigley Field in front of a large crowd of family and friends that will make the journey to see the rookie's second career start.

D-backs: Scherzer made his Major League debut on April 29 and set the baseball world buzzing as he retired all 13 batters he faced in relief of Edgar Gonzalez. Scherzer, who was the team's No. 1 pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, struck out seven and his electric fastball reached 98 mph at times during the dominating performance. The D-backs put Scherzer in the rotation in place of Gonzalez and he struggled a bit in his first start against the Phillies, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings.

Dempster proud to give back

Looking to make an impact, Ryan Dempster has offered 50 tickets to families of military members to this Sunday's Mother's Day game against the D-backs. Although his guests will miss his Saturday start, he will meet the group for lunch before the finale.

Cubs: Dempster is coming off his first loss of the season. He was charged with five runs -- none earned -- on four hits over six innings against the Reds. The right-hander is the first Cubs pitcher to give up at least five unearned runs and no earned runs since Greg Hibbard was charged with six runs, all unearned, on July 11, 1993, against Houston. Dempster did strike out a season-high seven, but the Reds took advantage of two errors by the Cubs for the win.

Bullpen bears loss

Max Scherzer allowed one run on five hits, striking out six in six innings in his second career start and left with a lead, but the Arizona bullpen allowed the Cubs to bat around for six runs in the seventh. The D-backs scored two runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Justin Upton and an RBI groundout by Mark Reynolds.

Cubs bat around

Kosuke Fukudome hit a two-run home run to finish off a six-run rally in the seventh inning, when the Cubs sent nine batters to the plate. Alfonso Soriano had a big, four-hit day, while Ryan Dempster mowed down the D-backs in the first five frames, but allowed two runs in his sixth and final inning and picked up a no-decision.
