Darrell Rasner delivered in his season debut, retiring 16 of the 19 batters he faced after giving up a two-run homer to the Mariners' Adrian Beltre, and he'll try to duplicate that performance against the Tigers on Saturday, when the Yankees continue a three-game set at Comerica Park in Detroit.

- (1-0) 3.00 ERA
Yankees: Rasner was called up from Triple-A Scranton to make his first 2008 start in the Majors in a game against Seattle on Sunday. He gave up two runs on two hits in the first inning, and then settled in to pitch five scoreless innings, during which he gave up only three hits. With youngsters Phil Hughes, who is injured, and Ian Kennedy, who is working out his pitching problems in Triple-A, not around, Rasner has a great chance to stick with the team and said he intends to take advantage of it. He didn't walk a batter on Sunday and yielded only six in 31 innings at Scranton.

There's something about facing the Bronx Bombers that seems to bring out the best in Jeremy Bonderman. For their sake, the Tigers are hoping that pattern holds when the Yankees visit Comerica Park for a Saturday afternoon clash on FOX.
Tigers probable pitcher
Jeremy Bonderman
- RHP
- (2-3) 4.17 ERA
Tigers: The good news for Bonderman was that his slider was more consistent as an out pitch in his last start against Boston. The bad news was he yielded a pair of two-run homers that sank his fortunes in defeat. He needed 113 pitches to last six innings, but he was much more efficient in his previous start against the Yankees. If he can keep that up in the rematch, he could continue his pattern of alternating wins and losses so far this season.

Ras-matazz (19-19) (16-22)
Yankees 5, Tigers 2
If you thought Darrell Rasner couldn't reel off another strong start, think again. Backed by three RBI doubles and Derek Jeter's first homer of the season, the righty beat the Tigers for his second straight victory. Wilson Betemit, who contributed an RBI double, left in the fourth with a strained right hamstring.

For the first time in five games this season, the Tigers dropped a contest to the Yankees. Jeremy Bonderman, who had beaten New York his last time out, struggled to get going, lasting just four-plus innings and giving up five runs. Detroit's first run came courtesy of Matthew Joyce's first career homer in the first inning.
