It's back to the road for the Padres, who had no soon settled in at PETCO Park after a nine-game road trip -- a trip that ended with a 2-7 record after visiting Philadelphia, Florida and Atlanta. The Padres play four games in Chicago against the Cubs starting Monday with Randy Wolf on the mound against Carlos Zambrano.

Padres: Wolf pitched well at times in his last start on May 7 in Atlanta, needing 78 pitches to get through six innings. Better still, Wolf got the Braves to hit into four double plays in the first six innings alone before loading the bases with no outs in a 2-2 game in the seventh inning. Reliever Joe Thatcher allowed those three runs to score as the Padres. Wolf, who had four walks, struggled with his command early but soon got the Braves to hit ground ball after ground ball.

Big Z goes against hapless Padres

Carlos Zambrano had been excited to wear pink for Mother's Day and face Randy Johnson, but inclement weather forced him to be bumped from his start. His start on Monday again the last-place Padres may not be exciting, but getting the win is just as important.

Cubs: The big right-hander is coming off his most efficient outing of the season. Zambrano's 113 pitches marked his second-highest total of the season, but it came over a season-high eight innings in which he struck out only three. Cubs wolf down Padres (14-25) (23-15)

Cubs 12, Padres 3

Outmatched in opener

The Padres were unable to contain the Cubs as Randy Wolf allowed seven runs in four-plus innings, and the bullpen didn't fare much better. Jody Gerut hit his first homer since 2005, and Edgar Gonzalez, called up Monday, had an RBI single in his first Major League at-bat.

On cruise control

The Cubs outran the Padres by putting together a six-run fifth and a five-run sixth to run their win streak to four. Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer, while Geovany Soto and Mark DeRosa each drove in two and Ryan Theriot scored three times to back Carlos Zambrano's fifth straight win.
