Rebound rests on left arm of Estes

The Padres' modest win streak came to an end Monday night against Carlos Zambrano and the hot-hitting Cubs. Retribution would come in the unlikely form of Shawn Estes on Tuesday.

Padres probable pitcher

Shawn Estes

  • LHP
  • (0-0) 0.00 ERA
Padres: On the day that he had his contract purchased from Triple-A Portland, Estes allowed two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief in a 5-4 loss to the Braves on Thursday, striking out two and walking one. He is the Padres' No. 5 starter for now and will make his first start since April 5, 2006, when he faces the Cubs. Estes threw some nice two-seam fastballs against the Braves and had good break on his curveball, impressing manager Bud Black.

The Cubs may have swept the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they still have some work to do. On Monday, the Cubs romped, 12-3, against the San Diego Padres. There was no letdown after sweeping the D-backs, who came into Chicago with the best record in the National League.

Cubs probable pitcher

Jason Marquis

  • RHP
  • (1-2) 5.08 ERA
Cubs: Marquis is coming off a disappointing loss against the Cardinals in which he walked five and gave up seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander does have a slightly better ERA on the road, but he's kept the walks down at home, issuing three in three starts over 16 1/3 innings. On the road, he's walked 12 in 17 1/3 innings. Marquis hasn't been consistent, and usually gets off to a good start. He needs to get on track.

Padres go fourth and prosper (15-25) (23-16)

Padres bowl big frame

The Padres used a four-run fourth inning, sparked by Khalil Greene's three-run homer and capped by Jody Gerut's go-ahead double, to edge the Cubs. Shawn Estes, making his first start since 2006, singled, scored and yielded two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for career win No. 100.

Cubs hit speed bump

It certainly appeared the Cubs were off and running to their fifth straight win after they got a leadoff homer from Alfonso Soriano and a two-run double from Reed Johnson in the second. But they were shut down after that, unable to compensate for the four runs Jason Marquis allowed in 5 2/3.
