Many looking forward to St. Louis series

Several members of the Rays have fond memories of growing up and watching the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. They will play at the new stadium on Friday.

Rays probable pitcher

Andy Sonnanstine

  • #21 RHP
  • (5-1) 5.07 ERA 26 SO
Sonnanstine had picked up wins in four consecutive starts prior to Sunday's outing against the Angels, when he allowed five runs on eight hits while walking two to take a no-decision. Sonnanstine's best pitch is the slider, but in order for him to pitch well, he needs to locate his fastball to set up the vast array of pitches he throws from all different angles. He is 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA in three road starts this season. This will be his first career start against the Cardinals.

Cards begin daunting Interleague slate

With the Rays coming to town for a weekend series, the Cards are getting an early reminder of the difficulty of their schedule for Interleague Play.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Braden Looper

  • RHP
  • (5-2) 4.21 ERA 20 SO
Looper skipped his side session after working 8 1/3 innings in the thin Colorado air the start before, but he said he felt physically fine when he allowed four runs in six innings against Milwaukee. He struggled keeping the ball down, and Ryan Braun took advantage by smacking two home runs in the Cardinals' 5-3 loss. Looper only walked one and hit another batter -- but both of those scored in the first inning to spot the Brewers an early lead.

Sonnanstine shines for Rays (25-17) (24-20)

Rays 3, Cardinals 1

Sonnanstine dominant

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena and Akinori Iwamura each delivered RBI singles, and they were plenty for Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine, who limited the Cards to eight hits while tossing eight innings of one-run ball for his fifth straight win.

Cards punchless

Braden Looper limited the Rays to three runs despite giving up 10 hits, but the Cards' offense was lacking against Tampa Bay starter Andy Sonnanstine, with Chris Duncan's eighth-inning homer providing the Redbirds' lone tally.
