Garza looking to make inside, out

Matt Garza has been considerably better under the sky than under a roof, and he'll get to test that trend -- outside -- at Busch in the middle game vs. the Cards.

Rays probable pitcher

Matt Garza

  • RHP
  • (2-1) 3.86 ERA
Rays: The right-hander is beginning to develop into the dominating pitcher the Rays had hoped for when they acquired Garza in an offseason trade with the Twins. He is coming off his best performance of the season -- his first scoreless appearance in a season-high seven innings vs. the Yankees. Garza held New York sluggers Bobby Abreu, Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi to a combined 0-for-7 in his 108-pitch effort, and will look for his third win of the season vs. the Cardinals.

After a less-than-stellar start his last time out, Adam Wainwright gets his chance at redemption vs. the Rays at Busch, where he's unbeaten this season.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Adam Wainwright

Cardinals: Wainwright wasn't sharp his last time out, but it had to happen at some point. Nobody goes through a flawless season. Being back home should suit the right-hander. He's 3-0 at Busch Stadium with a 3.5 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an average of 7.75 innings per start.

Cards trump Rays in extras (25-18) (25-20)

Cardinals 9, Rays 8 (10)

Rays falter in clutch

Tampa Bay rallied back from a four-run deficit on Carlos Pena's three-run homer and tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Evan Longoria, but the Rays couldn't hold the Cards back in extras as reliever Dan Wheeler gave up the game-winning homer in the 10th.

Ludwick carries Cards

St. Louis worked its way back from an early shortfall against Tampa Bay, bolstered by solo homers by Ryan Ludwick and Albert Pujols, but the Cards fell back under fire and were forced into extra innings, where Ludwick saved the day with a walk-off homer in the 10th.
