Randolph confident in Reyes' focus

Ever since the dawn of his slump last September, Jose Reyes has struggled to spark the Mets as he has done in years past. But after a meeting with his shortstop, Mets manager Willie Randolph concluded that the struggles had nothing to do with his shortstop's state of mind. Instead, they were the temporary kind of struggles.

Mets probable pitcher

Oliver Perez

  • LHP
  • (3-3) 4.61 ERA
Mets: Perez shut out the Reds, who had 29 hits in the doubleheader the previous day, on one hit, three walks, a hit batsman for five innings, striking out eight Sunday afternoon. But a six-batter sequence in the sixth produced three runs and ended his workday at 102 pitches. He has a 3-1 record and 3.04 ERA in four career starts and 26 2/3 innings against the Yankees. Hideki Matsui has hit two home runs in seven career at-bats against Perez.

The ultimate "go figure" moment of Jason Giambi's season came in the fourth inning on Saturday, when the Yankees first baseman dug in against Johan Santana and ripped a line drive about as hard as you can back up the middle. Up went Santana's right hand, in went the baseball and Giambi was robbed of yet another early-season hit. These were the times that lucky slump-busting underwear was created for, it would seem.

Yankees probable pitcher

Chien-Ming Wang

  • RHP
  • (6-1) 2.90 ERA
Yankees: Wang narrowly avoided a tough-luck loss in his last start, which morphed into a tough-luck no-decision only because Hideki Matsui hit a ninth-inning homer to tie Tuesday's game at Tampa Bay. Wang worked seven innings against the Rays, allowing a run on seven hits while walking three -- tying a season high -- and striking out two. He wasn't especially pleased, but said it was "OK." Wang has faced the Mets once before in his career, on June 17 of last season at Yankee Stadium, when he came one out shy of a complete game in the Yankees' 8-2 victory. Wang allowed two runs on six hits that night, walking one and striking out 10 to outduel Orlando Hernandez.

Mets answer the call (22-19) (20-24)

Mets 11, Yankees 2

Perez steps up

The Mets were robbed in the fourth inning by an overruled call that turned a three-run Carlos Delgado homer into a foul ball, but none of that mattered to Oliver Perez, who went 7 2/3 innings for his biggest win of the season. Jose Reyes hit his second homer in as many games.

Wang can't capitalize

Hitless into the fourth inning, Chien-Ming Wang saw his night unravel in the 35-pitch frame, and although the Yankees benefited from an overturned home run call, Wang allowed four runs in the fateful frame and seven in all, taking his second loss in a span of three starts.
