Pirates hope to shine in finale vs. Cubs

The Pirates have gone 8-8 in day games this year, and they'll be looking to improve upon that mark when they face the Cubs on Sunday at Wrigley Field.

Pirates probable pitcher

Phil Dumatrait

  • LHP
  • (1-1) 3.96 ERA
Pirates: In his third start since joining the rotation, Dumatrait looked the strongest as he has all season. He extended himself out to 88 pitches and did it without tiring, which was a problem in his previous start. Using a newly invented changeup to complement his other pitches, Dumatrait limited the St. Louis damage to just a three-run homer in six innings of work. He continues to pitch with a confidence and poise that was not there a year ago.

Marquis looks to rebound vs. Pirates

After being saddled with losses in three straight outings, Cubs starter Jason Marquis will attempt to reverse his fortunes Sunday against the Pirates.

Cubs probable pitcher

Jason Marquis

  • RHP
  • (1-3) 5.26 ERA
Cubs: Marquis had one bad inning in his last start against the Padres. The right-hander gave up four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings in the loss, his third in a row. He blew a 3-0 lead, and among the hits he served up was a three-run homer to Khalil Greene. Marquis has been stronger in the first half than the second, so his struggles are tough to understand. He needs to get back on track.

A walk's as good as a hit (21-23) (27-17)

Cubs 4, Pirates 3

Loss of control

Pirates starter Phil Dumatrait was uncharacteristically wild, walking seven batters in 4 2/3 innings, four of whom came around to score. Adam LaRoche was a bright spot on offense with a two-run homer and an RBI single.

Marquis ends slide

Each of the four runs the Cubs scored was the result of a Pirates free pass, and it proved to be enough offense for starter Jason Marquis, who allowed just four hits in six innings to snap a personal three-game losing streak.
