Bedard and Burke comfortable together

Knowing how well starter Erik Bedard and catcher Jamie Burke work together, the Mariners are hoping that the battery can get the Mariners back to winning ways against the Yankees.

Mariners probable pitcher

Erik Bedard

  • LHP
  • (3-2) 3.24 ERA
Mariners: Bedard had a veteran effort Saturday against San Diego. He fell behind 2-1 by the fourth inning, but hung in there and denied the Padres for the rest of his effort. He was rewarded with the win when the Mariners rallied for three runs in the seventh. Bedard allowed just two runs and five hits while striking out 10 in eight innings. Against the Yankees, Bedard is 4-4 in his career. He lost 5-1 on May 2, going seven innings, allowing four hits but just one earned run.

Farnsworth likely to fill setup role

With Joba Chamberlain being groomed for the starting rotation, the Yankees now have to fill the eighth-inning role. Of Joe Girardi's options, veteran Kyle Farnsworth appears to be the most likely candidate.

Yankees probable pitcher

Andy Pettitte

  • LHP
  • (3-5) 4.42 ERA
Yankees: Pettitte recorded the loss on Saturday vs. the Mets, allowing all three runs in a 41-pitch fourth inning -- once again, bit by a single bad frame. He is now 0-4 in his last five starts at Yankee Stadium dating back to last year, his longest losing streak at the Stadium since losing his last four home starts in 1996. His last win actually came on April 20 at Baltimore, when the left-hander shut the Orioles out on four hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out five.

Yanks' opening salvo (18-31) (23-25)

Yankees 13, Mariners 2

Slide hits four games

Hoping a change of scenery would do the trick, Seattle was looking to end a three-game slide in the Bronx, but Erik Bedard did not have his ace stuff in the opener. The game completely turned in the Yanks' favor following an eight-run fifth.

As easy as they come

Picking up run support to last a lifetime, the Yankees pounded the Mariners to give Andy Pettitte his fourth win of the season. An eight-run fifth inning in which the Bronx Bombers sent 13 men to the plate was all she wrote for the Mariners.
