Schedule provides Mets opportunity

The Mets have struggled to get their season in gear, but June provides Willie Randolph's club with the opportunity to build up in the win column at the expense of some of the lesser teams in baseball.

Mets probable pitcher

John Maine

  • #33 RHP
  • (5-4) 3.66 ERA 54 SO
Maine struggled early against the Dodgers on Friday night at Shea Stadium. After opening the game with four straight balls to put Juan Pierre on base, he gave up three hits and three runs in the first inning to give L.A. the quick advantage. But Maine bounced back, surrendering just two hits and one run through the next five innings to come away with a no-decision. In 101 pitches, he recorded six strikeouts and one walk. Maine impressed manager Willie Randolph with his ability to settle down and find his rhythm.

Giants reflect on Draft madness

The MLB First-Year Player Draft hasn't yet reached the popularity level of the over-the-top NFL Draft, but it's getting close. For Giants pitchers selected in recent years, the memories remain vivid and exciting.

Giants probable pitcher

Matt Cain

  • #18 RHP
  • (2-3) 4.38 ERA 65 SO
Cain struggled in the third frame of his previous outing, allowing three runs against the Padres, but ended up lasting through the seventh without surrendering another score. Not bad, considering he was hit on the right forearm in the first inning by a Brian Giles line drive. Alas, he had nothing to show for his effort, leaving with six strikeouts but no decision. It was the third time in 2008, and the sixth time since 2006, that Cain faced Greg Maddux, against whom he has an 0-3 record. The right-hander has allowed three runs or less in six of his last eight outings.

Cain a daytripper

Matt Cain had struggled during day games this season heading into Wednesday's finale, and the trend continued, as he allowed five runs over five innings. Mets starter John Maine held the Giants offense at bay as they dropped the three-game set.
