Alex Rios will continue to try to turn his season around on Wednesday, when the Blue Jays take on the Yankees in the second tilt of a three-game set in the Bronx. On the hill for New York will be veteran Mike Mussina -- a pitcher Rios has hit .304 against over his career.
Blue Jays probable pitcher
Jesse Litsch
- #51 RHP
- (7-1) 3.18 ERA 37 SO
In his last start, the 23-year-old Litsch became the first Blue Jays pitcher to pick up win No. 7 in his first 10 starts of a season since Jays ace Roy Halladay accomplished the feat in 2005. During that Thursday outing, Litsch limited Kansas City to no runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk over seven innings. In May, Litsch went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA and set a Jays franchise record by going 38 straight innings without walking a batter during one stretch. Litsch is 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA in three career games against New York.

Girardi will need to lean on Kyle Farnsworth after shuffling the pitching staff. With Joba Chamberlain moved into the starting rotation, Farnsworth will likely be called upon to fill the critical eighth-inning role. But that's not anything new. Farnsworth has experience as a reliever and a closer, so he doesn't see it as a change.
Yankees probable pitcher
Mike Mussina
- RHP
- (8-4) 4.26 ERA 33 SO
With the benefit of a few subtle yet effective changes in his approach, Mussina kept the Yankees in the game long enough to overcome a three-run deficit on Friday, plus some. After being hit around for four runs -- two earned -- in the first inning, Mussina fired five scoreless frames. He would hang around to accumulate a season-high 109 pitches while scattering six hits, walking one and striking out two.

Derek's hit has domino effect (32-29) (29-30)
Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1
Jesse Litsch endured his shakiest start in more than a month, charged with four runs over 5 1/3 innings, the most runs he'd allowed and his shortest start since April 22. Alex Rios went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. That run came courtesy of Scott Rolen's RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.

The Yankees' first run on Wednesday came on Derek Jeter's 2,416th career hit, a single that carried him past Mickey Mantle and into sole possession of third place on the Yanks' all-time list. Four more Bombers would go on to plate runs for Mike Mussina, who fanned a season-high six batters.
