Parisi looks to ease bullpen load

The pressure was already on Mike Parisi. Now it's going to double. The right-hander knows that he's going to have to improve on his first Major League outing to keep a taxed bullpen from getting even more tired in a doubleheader.

Cardinals: Parisi gets one more chance to show his stuff. In his first Major League start, he was roughed up, but with Pineiro still out, he gets another shot. The right-hander, who throws a fastball, a curveball and a changeup, pitched very well in eight relief appearances before he was slotted into the rotation. He hopes to benefit from having a regular five-day routine, as opposed to last time, when he pitched four days after a relief appearance.

Nats keeping rotation for doubleheader

Minutes after his team's Wednesday night game against St. Louis was postponed due to rain, Nationals manager Manny Acta announced that John Lannan would start Game 1 of Thursday's day-night doubleheader at 1:10 p.m. ET and Tim Redding would start the second game at 7:10 p.m.

Nationals: Redding lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on four hits against the Diamondbacks last Friday. He cruised through the first three innings and didn't allow a hit. But he struggled through the next 2 1/3 innings because of mechanical issues.

Washington walks off (35-26) (25-35)

Nationals 10, Cardinals 9 (10)

Almost enough magic

The Cardinals were down 7-0 early in the game, but there was no quit as the Redbirds chipped away, eventually forcing extra innings. But one run to take the lead in the 10th was countered by a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the frame.

Series at a Glance

Offense wakes up

Washington's bats had been quiet for days, until they broke out for eight runs in the first four innings. When it looked like shaky pitching would waste the outburst, the Nationals had one spark left -- Elijah Dukes' walk-off homer in the 10th.
