Cards looking for a good night's sleep

The St. Louis Cardinals could certainly use a good night's sleep before facing the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the series on Saturday night.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Adam Wainwright

  • RHP
  • (5-3) 3.12 ERA
Cardinals: Wainwright was inconsolable after his last outing, in which he was brilliant through six innings only to fall apart in the seventh. Historically, that's been a good sign. When Wainwright is disappointed in his game, he tends to bounce back extremely strong. He also loves facing the rival Astros, against whom he's tossed two excellent games already this season.

Astros have tough road ahead

After a 2-7 road trip, a nine-game homestand doesn't get much easier for the Astros as they take on St. Louis, Milwaukee and the New York Yankees. First up is Game 2 against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Astros probable pitcher

Shawn Chacon

  • RHP
  • (2-1) 4.41 ERA
Astros: Chacon suffered his first loss of the season in abbreviated fashion, throwing 40 pitches over one inning during a landslide defeat by the Brewers. Chacon yielded four runs, walked two and hit two. The right-hander has faced the Cardinals twice this year. He took a no-decision on April 8 at home, yielding three runs over six innings. On May 27, Chacon allowed two runs over seven innings in a winning effort at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals prevail over Astros (37-27) (32-31)

Cardinals 8, Astros 4

Cards' bats break out

Adam Wainwright suffered a middle-finger strain in the sixth inning on Saturday, but things otherwise went swimmingly for the Cardinals as they evened this three-game series with a win over the Astros, thanks to a seven-run outburst in the second inning.

Chacon struggles

Astros starter Shawn Chacon was saddled with his second loss of the season on Saturday, in large part due to a second-inning meltdown that saw the Cardinals score seven runs. The Astros hitters tried to rally but fell short in the end.
