Volquez tries to salvage series for Reds

The National League's newest pitching sensation, Edinson Volquez, will take the mound for the Reds on Monday as Cincinnati tries to salvage a split of their four-game series at Dolphin Stadium. The rookie's 1.32 ERA is the best in the Majors.

Reds: Volquez continued his streak of brilliance with seven scoreless innings against the Phillies on Wednesday. The 24-year-old allowed just two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts, lowering his Major League-best ERA to 1.32. Volquez threw 113 pitches -- the second-most he has thrown this season -- 69 of them strikes. His two hits allowed tied for the second-fewest he's given up and the seven innings tied for his longest start. It's the fourth time Volquez has lasted seven innings in a start. His only start against the Marlins this season came in a May 13 win, when he pitched six innings and gave up one run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Hendrickson set to stop Griffey, Reds

Mark Hendrickson isn't new to facing a hitter on the doorstep of history. He took on Barry Bonds last year, so pitching to Ken Griffey Jr. as "The Kid" guns for homer No. 600 will be just another game for him, albeit one with a few more flashbulbs.

Marlins: Not overwhelming but still solid best describes Hendrickson's last outing. At Atlanta on June 4, the left-hander allowed four runs in six innings. He scattered nine hits, walked two (one intentionally). He wasn't involved in the decision. Three of the four runs came on two-out hits. But the six innings were his most since working seven on May 2 in a win over San Diego. He had gone five straight starts without working more than five innings.

600 sweet swings for Griffey (31-34) (34-29)

Griffey vaults Reds

Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th career home run got the Reds rolling in the first, and catcher Paul Bako clubbed two dingers as Cincinnati salvaged a split of the four-game series vs. Florida. Edinson Volquez notched his ninth win of the season.

Bruised by homers

Mark Hendrickson, who had allowed only six homers in 72 2/3 innings coming into Monday, surrendered three long balls, including Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th, in just 2 1/3 innings, and the Marlins dropped the finale of the four-game set vs. the Reds.
