Johnson familiar with Cubs' opponent

If there is one person who knows about the Cubs' mound opponent on Saturday, it's Reed Johnson. Johnson manned the outfield behind Roy Halladay for five seasons. He hopes to impart his knowledge to his new team.

Cubs probable pitcher

Jason Marquis

  • RHP
  • (4-3) 4.54 ERA
Cubs: Marquis is coming off his best outing of the season. He gave up three hits over 6 1/3 innings against the Dodgers, striking out two. The right-hander has had great side sessions, and hasn't been able to take that into games -- but the start in Los Angeles was a big step. Marquis now has won his last three decisions. Basically, he needs to trust his stuff.

Ryan working way through tough times

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons seemed surprised at the question. On Friday afternoon, Toronto's skipper was asked if the club had considered rethinking B.J. Ryan's throwing program in light of the closer's recent struggles.

Blue Jays probable pitcher

Roy Halladay

  • RHP
  • (8-5) 3.07 ERA
Blue Jays: Halladay has been dominant of late, posting a 5-0 record and a 2.72 ERA over his past six appearances. Over that span, he's compiled 34 strikeouts and just two walks over 39 2/3 innings. On Sunday, Halladay picked up a win over the Orioles, allowing four runs on eight hits, including a pair of home runs to Luke Scott, with seven strikeouts and no walks over 7 2/3 innings. Halladay is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in one career start against the Cubs.

Reed all about it: Cubs win! (44-25) (35-35)

Cubs 6, Blue Jays 2

Marquis masterful

Jason Marquis allowed just one hit through seven innings before running into trouble in the eighth, but by then the Cubs had all the run support they needed, courtesy of former-Jay Reed Johnson's three-run blast in the second inning.

Error dooms Doc

Only two of Roy Halladay's six runs allowed over five innings were earned as the Jays fell behind early after a David Eckstein error was followed by a three-run home run over the left-field wall by former teammate Reed Johnson.
